Two new Sprint sites came online today, one on South Cobb Dr near King Springs road, and one on Cooper Lake Rd in Mableton. Checked the RSSI on a Sprint Startac and was through the roof at -50dm, full signal all over the place on King Springs and South Cobb near the hospital. Two more Sprint sites have been approved by the Cobb commission, one of the near Windy Hill Rd and Atlanta Rd. So things are improving on the Northside of Atlanta here in Cobb county, Ga. |

Even more impressive was the fact that this evening I saw Sprint PCS technicians crusing the south cobb drive area, and encountered one at the Quiktrip on south cobb dr and talked to him. Sure enough, they were working late into the evening doing performance testing on the new sites. I may activate my Sprint phone again, and since I will be spending some time in Macon later, this may work out better than Verizon, as Roamer1 has pointed out that VZW pulled SPCS from their PRL and VZW's Macon/Bibb coverage sucks. I have used Sprint in Macon and it worked great. When do the new plans roll out for Sprint PCS? |

Will they really have new plans this time or just carry the existing ones over again?

I'm a SPCS customer in Cobb county (I live almost in the NW shadow of Kennesaw Mtn) since April 2000. When it comes to improving coverage, it's been a slow, but progressing, boil. Sprint had a lot of trouble for the past couple of years getting sites approved, and had to re-group and go with alternate plans it seems. For example, the formerly dead spot at Kennesaw Due West and Stilesboro roads. Sprint had wanted to put in a site about 1.5 miles west of there, but could not get it through. They have been rebuffed on other sites as well. I was happy to see they finally decided to use an existing American Tower site at the above intersection, and this spring put in a new taller 200 ft tower, going in on the top and relocating the other tenants onto the new tower at their existing heights. It was funny for about 5 days to see the two towers about 15 ft apart. I nice lady at Sprint on the properites/buildout side kept me up to date on the progress. I hope the King Springs rd site will also help a weak spot on Atlanta rd just north of I-285. I have not had any problems at Windy Hill and Atlanta roads - good strong signal. To the degree all 1900 MHz carriers are handicapped by both the frequency itself and shorter timeframe they have had to build-out, it makes you kinda want to root for the underdog. That, and the cool Sprint phones. ;-) |

SPCS is adding more sites, sure, but their network is oversold, and "cell breathing" is quite obvious in certain areas (e.g., Ponce between Moreland and where it turns into Scott Blvd, where the only decent coverage appears to be Verizon -- even Cingular seems bad in that area. The EXTREME NIMBY-ism in that area more or less ensures that things stay the way they are ...even Dunwoody, Mount Paran near the river, etc. aren't that bad) -SC
