Does anyone know if it is possible to use a Cingular GSM phone in the state of Alabama (Alabama being my home area)? I know the retail stores only sell TDMA phones now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

well, the closest GSM market is Knoxville, TN... so you wouldn't be able to get Cingular GSM service at all... Unless you had an address in Knoxville and signed up for service there. There IS GSM in Alabama, but it's T-Mobileicon/Voicestream, so you could easily sign up for their service if you're dead-set on getting a GSM phone. I have no idea when Cingular will be GSM in that area, either. They seem to be doing quite a few places by October, but I've heard nothing about Alabama.

Alabama is going to be the last place Cingular will build its GSM architecture. It however will be part of the RAO sharing agreement(rumoured) that gonna come out with T-Mobileicon. That means, even though BellSouth Mobility lacks the GSM footprint, Cingular can gain customers on the GSM phones throught a sharing agreement that will expire once BLSMB switches over to GSM.

This is unlikely to be done by 3Q2003. Best estimate 2Q 2004. So just get a T-Mobileicon phones for a year and see.

It will be a while before 800Mhz GSM is implemented in the USA. Cingular and VS are concentrating on GSM 1900 for now.

I'm not sure about SUNCOM, but Cingular plans to begin GSM overlay in April, 2003.
