Have an about- to- be college kid going to William & Mary and trying to figure out the best cell plan and company to keep in touch with us in Minneapolis. Any help would be appreciated

I'd go with the Verizon's America choice, or the Cingular nation plan. Personally I'd go with Verizon, unless maybe Cingular is offering a really good deal on a phone ( I really can't tell how good Cingular's coverage is since they just show the whole country). Both plans offer comprehensive roaming (so you can go home without paying more money) and free long distance which you need!

Cingular doesn't have a lot of coverage in Virginia period regardless of technology. I'd recommend Verizon myself.

Virginia seems to be a bit lacking in cellphone coverage... I wonder why this is.. probably because so much of it so so rural?

Depends on what part you are in, in Southwest Virginia ALLTEL and Verizon Wireless are pretty much your only 2 good choices and even then there is still some dead spots. Southwest VA is very hard to cover because of the mountains and hills plus its very rural and sparisly populated.

I would go with Verizon. They have the best coverage in Southeastern VA (Williamsburg is not in Southwestern VA, so coverage there is moot for this thread). Cingular does not cover this area, and as of now there is no GSM coverage in Hampton Roads. VS is supposed to be here soon, but Verizon is well established and has very good coverage in this area.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ADVICE! Verizon sounds like the way to go. Now to choose a plan. As an ____ retentive person, this may take a while. It is much more complicated than my initial forays into this field, five or twiddly years ago.
