Default Looking for a Phone Service without monthly fees

I need help finding a cell phone service.

I had been living in Italy for the last 3 yrs (military duty) and have been spoiled by the cell phone services available in Europe. I was able to purchase a phone with a number that I could use without a monthly fee for 3yrs. A person would simply purchase phone cards valued at $20 through $50 or more, which was credited to the phone/number. There was no condition of purchasing additional phone cards at monthly intervals or your phone service would be cut. Imagine my shock at returning to the U.S. and experiencing the HIGH COST of Cell phone service. That's Capitalism!

So I would appreciate any help finding a cell phone service that allows a person to pay for what they use only.

Well if you don't use a lot of minutes pre-paid might be your best option prepaid runs about 10 to 35 cents a minute depending on what time you use your phone and which prepaid service you use. There is no montly bills, no credit check, and no contract to sign however minutes do expire and you typically can't roam on pre-paid services. From what I have seen Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless seem to have the best pre-paid service you might want to look into them.

Cingular Wireless

Verizon Wireless

Note: Verizon's pre-paid service is called FREEUP so on the main page select FREEUP to check out there pre-paid service.

By the way, you can roam off-network, nationwide, with Verizon's FREEUP service. Only thing is, you gotta go thru several steps in order to place a call.

I didn't know that Jon thanks for the info. How much does it cost through to roam off network on FREEUP and exactly what does it involve?

Off-net roaming with VZW FreeUp is 99c/min, including LD. One caveat about VZW FreeUp: airtime charges apply to calls
that go to voicemail, period (not just to checking vmail from your cell phone); I recommend having VZW turn vmail off if you
don't absolutely need it.

Don't forget CallPlus prepaid (uses AT&T's network):

If you travel a lot it's probably the best option by far.

Contrary to popular belief, Sprint PCS does offer prepaid -- but it's very hard to find places (other than certain Wal*Marts)
that sell it.
