Default Used cell phones

Does anyone know if you can change services on a previously owned phone that was serviced by a particular cellular provider. I am thinking about bidding on a used phone and wondered if it would be a problem to change services. I live in Northern Mississippi and there are a few choices in companies. Any advise will be appreciated.

Kevin,

Nice piece on the used cell phone market.

Anonymous,
I agree that there are a lot of risks involved buying used but some people have had success dong it. Compatibility is the key, as Kevin pointed out in his link. If you are going to buy a used phone, make sure it is clearly communicated what carrier you will be using the phone on and that the phone is unlocked (a whole other thread could be dedicated to this topic). With cell phones highly subsidize by carriers I don't see the need to take the risks on used products but buyer beware!

I always get the ESN of the phone as well and contact the company that it was activated with. I do this to make sure that the phone wasn't lost/stolen or to see if the person who is selling it doesn't owe money to the cell provider.

If the phone was reported lost/stolen or if it's in collections the ESN is not released and it cannot be activated.
