Default Service & Plan Advice

Help! I've been looking at the plans from different cell phone services until I'm dizzy and I am so confused! I'll read one plan and it sounds great but when I read the fine print it isn't so great anymore.
My husband and I would like to get a cell phone for each of us. He's in the military and frequently gone to different areas in the US and Latin America and both our families are on opposite coasts so something with a good long distance plan would be great but I would like a good local plan.

If anyone can give me advice, I would greatly appreciate it

RachL I would glady help you out but I'm not sure where Fort Bragg, NC is. I've never heard of it. If you give me your zip code maybe I can do some digging around and see what I can find for you.

first off your going to have to get a nationwide plan to eliminate roaming verizons americas choice will give you the best overall coverage. and free longdistance and free roaming. with 1000 mobile to mobile minutes included with the plan.

The zip code for Ft. Bragg is 28307. It's right next to Fayetteville, NC.

Hopefully, your husband will get to stay home for a while. As a former Jarhead, I know all those deployments can be hard on a family! And I know all those Airborne types around Bragg get around even more than we did. Thanks for all you do.

As for service choices, Verizon is probably best nationwide for the USA, but I know nothing about cell service in Latin America. I would imagine you would probably be better off with some sort of prepaid service while you're there, but I am probably wrong! Stay away from Cingular in NC. Good luck.

Looking at what's avaible in that area I think I have to agree with the other posters. Verizon Wireless under a America's Choice Plan might work well for you.

If he is going to spend a considerable amount of time in Latin America, then skip over Verizon and Sprint and head for Cingular. Here's why:

Most Latin American carriers are TDMA. In fact, most of them were owned, either wholly or partly, at one point by BellSouth. Cingular's predecessor (BellSouth Mobility) offered the most extensive roaming in that part of the world, because a large number of their customers (particularly in the South Florida market) travel there. CDMA cities are much more sparse, and since Verizon and Cingular absolutely hate each other when it comes to roaming, you will find too many places where the phone won't work.

When you head over to Cingular, make sure you get a GAIT phone...the 2 they are currently carrying are the Ericsson T62U and the Nokia 6340i.

I agree that, if available locally, Verizon's America's Choice plan would be a good one. I am retired Army, travel a lot in Virginia, SC, and Eastern and Coastal NC and have always had good connectivity.

HOWEVER, if choosing Verizon, be forewarned that although their coverage is very good, their customer service, integrity when living up to their part of your contractual agreement, and basic unwillingness to right the wrongs they create, are not up to at least my standards. I keep their service because I need the coverage they provide but would change in a heartbeat if the competition were there.
