I was activating a prepaid @ verizon the other day and was getting the Walmart simple freedom welcome message... I found out Alltel/walmart use verizon under the Simple freedom name in markets lacking adequate alltel coverage. Pretty interesting I thought.

Yup, they sell the SF package here and only Verizon serves Delaware. It seems SF is a combo of Alltel and Verizon. They sell the 3585i for SF here now....so why cannot we buy the 3585i for Verizon yet?! Obviously it performs well enough on Verizon and Alltel. I still think FREEUP is better, and the whole calls forwarded to voicemail cost money is BS, that's why my parent's use Virgin Mobile.

Alltel, being based in Little Rock as well as Walmart, gives them a really tight relationship. Alltel manages the leases on the wireless kiosk inside the walmart locations...

I don't see why Simple Freedom uses Verizon's Network in this area though. ALLTEL has a good network in this area. It should use ALLTEL and then Verizon as a backup when there is no ALLTEL signal.

Well...here in Atlanta, Cingular (!!! ) has kiosks inside the local Wal*Marts. As for why ALLTEL is putting Simple Freedom customers on VZW in the Tri-Cities: Maybe ALLTEL is out of phone numbers for SF customers, or ALLTEL puts ALL customers in TN on VZW (since, after all, there's no ALLTEL in most of TN) to save on roaming costs? -SC

It is CIngular/SPCS in DE at walmart (few of them have cell kiosks). The prices are $$$$, 80 something for a 3360! They have some odd plans, 28$ for a plan that is 30$ elsewhere, still not worth the price on the phone. Ugh, wal-marts are taking over the world lol.

Interesting, I guess VZW and Alltel have a good "relationship". I know when I spent some time in west Arkansas (specifically speaking of Osceola, Blytheville and Jonesboro) my Verizon phone (a Star-Tac 7868W at the time) showed a flashing "ROAM" but I had excellent service everywhere there (while other carriers such as T-Mobile and Sprint SUCKED). I called *611 and got Verizon customer care, but my phone was on Alltel's network. VZW said my calls were "home rate" under AC so long as my phone had a "fast flashing RM" or "extended network" . Sure enough they were, when I got my bill next month, they all showed to be home area calls even though I was "off network". When I looked at Arkansas, it almost all shows to be "extended" network. I guess it works both ways for Alltel customers on VZW's network?

Yes, Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL have a very strong relationship. The phones and there prices are even very similar also. ALLTEL is pretty much like the regional version of Verizon. On the Wal-Mart note the closest one to me has a ALLTEL office inside it. It's not a kiosk but a actual little office that even takes payments and has a drop box!

I like the fact Alltel has so many company stores. This big VZW/Alltel relationship makes Alltel my 2nd favorite carrier. It's quite amusing the Alltel people use VZW as a selling tool...

Images: 2 | VZW (ALLTEL customers roam on VZW there), Nextel, and oddly enough, T-Mobile seem to have the best coverage in the Auburn/Opelika area. The main problem with VZW/ALLTEL in that area is that areas just to the north and east of Aubulika -- including approximately 10 miles of I-85 (i.e., Chambers County) -- are roaming with VZW AC and ALLTEL NF plans. Still, that roaming is easy enough to avoid -- no digital = don't make or take a call. -SC

I think that your child will be perfectly fine with Alltel. Roaming on Verizon is transparent and all of his/her features will work as if they were on the home network. Check out getting a National Freedom Plan....It should work out fine but do be careful as Roamer1 said.....if the Triangle on the phone is solid, you will be charged roaming.....Blinking is free roaming.
