I may be in the market very soon for a new carrier. I'm considering Alltel or Verizon & may go prepaid. Which of these two has the best deal that allows national roaming & long distance?

ALLTEL's standard pre-paid service does not allow you to roam off there network. However Simple Freedom which is powered by ALLTEL does. Verizon Wireless has a good pre-paid system that allows you to roam off the network. Compare Simple Freedom and FREEUP at the links I am going to provide you below. A cursory check of both websites seems to indicate that the Alltel deal might be better than free-up. $.25/min vs. $.30/min. Plus, Alltel lets you keep your purchased minutes for 60 days, where Verizon only lets you keep them for 30 days (if you buy the least expensive refill card). Also, Alltel's nationwide roaming is $.50/min, where the Verizon rate was $.99 (I think).

I can understand you're view on pricing, and I agree with you, but, Verizon's network is a little larger than Alltel's so, you most likely wouldn't experience roaming as often. Just a thought H.T.H --J.T

Pricing is a concern to me, but in the areas that I travel, it looks like Alltel might have Verizon beat as well.

Yes, if you use more anytime minutes you are better off with Simple Freedom. The Simple Freedom Network is pretty large too, you shouldn't roam much and when you do you are correct that the roaming rates are cheaper with them. By the way at my local Wal-Mart they sell the Simple Freedom Package for around $50 which is cheaper then the Verizon prepay package |

Wow...Alltel's got Verizon beat in the prepaid market, in all areas except possibly coverage, and the fact that when you have Verizon pre-paid, you get lower rates for M2M calls, and when it's off peak, the calls are cheaper. And also, I believe you get 200 bonus weekend minutes whenever you "ReUp"..? Anyone please correct me if I am mistaken. --J.T

Actually not even in coverage the Simple Freedom Network coverages more areas of the country without roaming charges then even Verizon's prepay does I believe. All ALLTEL features work seemlessly on the Verizon Network to since they are such close roaming partners. Unless you use more Night & Weekend Minutes or MTM in my opinion Simple Freedom is a better pre-paid system

Yes, this is true, but, I can tell you, I would make my calls during off peak times if i knew it was cheaper, and I was having to pre-pay my minutes but, that's also considering I know that I'm in an area of Verizon's coverage . *GO ALLTEL AND VERIZON* --J.T

Simple Freedom is a really good deal now that they've started offerings the Nokia 3585i instead of the old 5185i, and it's priced at $69.82.

Considering that the GO Phone uses the AT&T GSM network, coverage is going to be more and better with Alltel. Brad |
