I am trying to decide which service is better to have in regards to coverage and service. I live in Raleigh, NC and will be traveling anywhere from Florida to New York. I need a cell phone provider that will cover these areas. Which do you prefer and why? Which do you think is better and why?

I think Alltel does have service in Florida, and I guess in NC too, but if you go out of state you will roam, so I'd think that it might be smarter to get a national carrier in the first place; this is just a general thought to look into. I don't know how coverage between those two carriers differs in your home town, but in general, if you do travel a lot out of state and you will roam, then it might be smarter to get a national carrier the first place.

They both will roam on eachother. Just find out if both have native coverage where you need it. Verizon has little coverage in eastern NC. Alltel is fine there. Alltel has coverage in western side FL but not eastern side FL. Alltel has no native coverage in NY. Alltel roams on Verizon there. hope that helps out more. Price plans are very simmlar for National freedom and Americas Choice |

Honestly they are going to be about equal for you. Verizon may serve all the areas you visit but ALLTEL will roam on Verizon Wireless. On National Plans ALLTEL users roam for free on the Verizon network and everything works just fine. ALLTEL has national plans that are very similar to Verizon's AC plans. Just chose whichever one you think has the better local coverage and gives you a better deal. I think you'd be happy with either carrier personally. |

I live in Greensboro and have had both providers. They roam on each other's networks and you'll probably be happy with either. The only thing strange about Alltel is that sometimes when I call an Alltel number, or call out while roaming on Alltel, I hear "click..click..click" for 10-20 seconds before the call seems to go through. I also think Verizon has slightly better audio quality--it seems louder to me. | |
