Cingular plans to invest $245 million to expand cell coverage in Texas Wednesday July 27, 5:31 pm ET Cingular Wireless said Wednesday it plans to spend $245 million this year to install about 150 new cell sites throughout South, Central and East Texas. The investment is part of the firm's $6.2 billion commitment to enhance and expand its network nationwide. Cingular plans to build new cell sites in the Austin, Houston (including Bryan-College Station, Galveston and Southeast Texas) and San Antonio (including the Rio Grande Valley) areas. Wireless expansion appears to be on the rise in the region. Last year, Cingular invested $106 million and installed 107 new cell sites in South Texas. A joint venture between San Antonio-based SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC - News) and BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS - News), Cingular Wireless has 51.6 million customers nationwide.
