I have a T68 (upgraded to T68i in July 02), bought in Finland. I put in the AT&T SIM card in Santa Monica, CA and the voice side works well. I have problems with the GPRS settings and neither AT&T nor SonyEricsson seem to be able to solve this... AT&T gave me the settings for WAP use which is basically creating a GPRS data account (CID=6, I have several accounts, a problem?) with the APN 'proxy. Otherwise clean settings. The WAP profile should have an IP address 101.250.250.250 and that's it... but it won't work. When connecting to a WAP site it says 'GPRS failed, GPRS parameters not supported (GPRS activated, blue bar visible on the screen, signal strength requirement?). SonyEricsson technical support said the phone GPRS software probably 'does not recognize the 1900 frequency..." Can you please help me get further with this? I believe I have already exhausted the AT&T and SE sources. |

My unlocked T68i worked fine with both US and European WAP/GPRS. As long as you create a new account and make no mistakes in settings it works like magic. Anyway I decided to switch over to Nokia 7210 - much better phone...

I think I have identified the problem myself: the AT&T GPRS service in Santa Monica is down since two weeks and according to AT&T store personnel they are fixing it but it does not seem to be very high up on their list... So much about the AT&T technical side taking seriously the marketing people who put out the brochures... |

I was in Santa Monica for Thanksgiving and my GPRS indicator was flat. I am now back in San Francisco and my phone works fine for both voice and data. I know my phone (T68i with AT&T) is set to 10.250.250.250. Give it a shot if data comes back in Santa Monica and your phone still doesn't work for GPRS.

By the way, when you put the AT&T SIM card in your phone bought in Finland, did you have to register it's IMEI with AT&T for it to work? I tried putting my AT&T SIM card in a phone purchased in Italy but it didn't work. I'm not sure whether the phone does not have the correct GSM band for the U.S. or whether AT&T requires the registration of the phone's IMEI for it to work.

Well, when I bought my phone from AT&T, they entered the IMEI into their computers as they were activating it. I'm not sure why they did that, if it's not tracked with the SIM card.

Don't you hate it when people assume you are dumb? They registered the IMEI number of the phone when I exchanged it. They took no other information. After they inputed the IMEI in the computer, they waited for something to happen. After that, they gave me the phone as said it should now work. Toni, how are you so sure AT&T does not require the SIM card to match a particular IMEI before providing service? |

Right, I agree, when I worked for Ericsson I was told that some US operators had started 'blocking' the use of imported phones. I believe this woudl have been the mechanism to do it. I ma not sure whether they still do it but not in this case at least. Some pretty senior Ericsson people tell me the imported phones should work- however, now the GPRS is up in Santa Monica and it still does not work which almost makes me conclude that there is a GPRS firmware upgrade needed on the phone level to my phone at least. AT&T is of course very little helpful in all this. |

When I contact AT&T's technical assistance, I'm sometimes amazed how little they know. However, there are other times when I get people who actually know and are helpful. I've had better luck calling during normal business hours. Perhaps they have the more experienced people working then.

Euromancer, I was in Santa Monica again Thursday and Friday (Dec 5 & 6). My GPRS indicator was at zero. Are you sure the problem is your phone and not the GPRS system in your area? |
