SCP 5500 as a modem

Hi,
Anyone have success using this cellphone as a modem? I just downloaded and installed the drivers for the cable from FutureDial and the modem and cable are recognized in hardware manager but can't connect to the internet.

I used Bitpim to communicate with it and all's fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I'm using my 5500 as a modem with my laptop on a regular basis with lots of success. I get a great 230-240kbps connection consistently.

What I've done is get the $9 data/charger cable from www.gomadic.com that has a USB plug on one end and the appropriate Sanyo phone plug on the other. No drivers needed. This cable allows for data/voice transmission while charging the phone right from the laptop at the same time.

Then I got the Sprint PCS Connection Manager software and set it up (pretty easy). Using it is simple. Just connect the phone to the cable and PC, then click on the Connection Manager executable and it automatically signs you in, etc.

The phone will still take SMS messages while on-line for PC. It will still ring on all incoming phone calls but will not disconnect you unless you answer the calls. After a call is completed, the Connection Manager automatically re-connects to the Vision network quickly. Pretty sweet.

I have a copy of the software (which has been free for the longest time but I can no longer find a link on the web for it) that I can provide, if you're interested.

You're a godsend. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to return this FutureDial data cable piece of crap back to Radio Shack and get the cable you suggested. And it recharges too

One question, will I be able to sign onto my regular ISP? Or will this be a Sprint connection?

Depending on which operating system you're using, you just have to set up a new connection to the internet with the FutureDial modem specified, use #777 as the number, and leave both the username and password blank. You don't need any other software (the Sprint-provided connection manager works but isn't necessary and is pretty bloated). Make sure you have Vision on your phone - otherwise it will get very expensive very fast. Have fun! - sheureka

Thanks for the heads up. I'm doing this for my friend. I'm not sure if he's got Vision or not. Is this a flat rate to get on the net? We had success with the #777 and no username and no password. It's a pretty fast connection. He does not want to keep using it untill Monday so he can contact Sprint. What does Sprint charge for this service?

Sprint will tell him that it's against the TOS to do it. With that said, unless your friend is running servers or downloading from Kaazaa all night Sprint doesn't care, but it certainly should not be used as the main ISP.

If your friend has Vision on his line (either the first 2 months free trial or the $15 (or $10) addon) there is no additional charge for hooking the phone up as a modem. - sheureka

Save the attached files to a safe place off your system partition. Remove the .txt extension from "sanyomdm.inf.txt". Cut and paste the contents of files 2 and 3 into "sanyomdm.inf". Use Device Manager to reinstall the device driver for the phone, and point to the folder in which you saved sanyomdm.inf. It may be necessary to rename the file "oem28.inf".

When you create a network connection with the Sanyo USB phone, configure the modem, change the maximum speed to 230400, and check the boxes for

Enable hardware flow control,
Enable modem error control, and
Enable modem compression.

That is all you need; the PCS connection manager is unnecessary.

i must be doing something wrong... i only get a 28.8k connection :-( i did this a year ago and had about 112k on my old laptop... i must be screwing up somewere
