Default VM 4500 loses signal when i put in pocket.

Is it the phone or is it Sprint's network not having enough signal strength to keep a consistant signal level?
It's frustrating 'cause i'm missing calls due to this problem.

That's why I never keep phones in my pockets. Happened to me with every carrier I have ever used...I lose the signal in places I normally wouldn't.

If this problem continues then I would say you have a bad handset and you need to have it replaced. Please make sure that your PRL is 10023. But your VM 4500 should not loose a signal in your pocket. If it is continuing to do this it is a bad handset.

What does PRL 10023 have to do with losing a Sprint signal? The PRL version you have doesn't matter unless you are roaming. I could have PRL 10010 (for example) and still get the same signal strength I do with 10023. On rare ocassions Sprint could add a new channel to their network which would then need a new PRL but there has never been any solid evidence that they have done that yet.

In order to get the most current towers on and off the network you need to have the most current PRL version. I understand that PRL stands for "preffered roaming list" but it also updates the network towers. When you don't have the current PRL you are missing the current network towers also.

PRL's have nothing to do with towers, only SID's and channels. Sprint and Verizon could add 100,000 towers in Columbus tomorrow and I wouldn't need a new PRL for my phone to "see" any of them unless they were assigned to a different SID.

No that's just a myth. You can access any new towers that Sprint adds with any PRL.

If that was a myth then I wouldn't be fixing reception issues when I update PRL's when customers come into the store with phones and out dated PRL's. You are all entitled to have your own opinion but from the technical standpoint and from the standpoint of what my Technical Service Reps do, and as a company, when we update a PRL we update your towers for the network also.

Come on SprintRocks you don't actually believe that do you? That's just how Sprint trains their store employees on what to do when customers come in and complain about signal issues. In reality it does nothing more than update their roaming list (which isn't very important).

It is a fact because it does fix the reception issues, I have noticed this myself. If you ask any TSR that is what they will tell you. PRL updates that include network towers are now done.

SprintRocks I have a question.

Have you ever put a phone in Feild Test mode?

Have you ever had a phone in test mode adn move from right in front of a window to right below the window (putting the wall vetween you and the outside worl) and seen what happens on the dbmeeter?

If you haven't then do it....it was an eye opener for me. ( -81 to -94)

Hey Dru,

Mayeb I'm being stupid today but what does that have to do with this discussion about whether or not a PRL adds towers?

I think maybe he quoted the wrong post and was trying to point out that the act of sticking ap hone in a pocket (thus obstructing the antenna) could actually cause a phone to lose signal. In other words, he is disagreeing with Sprintocks' assessment that if the phone loses signal in a pocket it must be defective.

Sorry if I am wrong with my assumption....

I used to cringe when I heard this when customers would come into stores with issues and the reps would offer a PRL upgrade....

The only time a software upgrade would significatly improve signal is if you are updating a firmware issue (such as the Verizon LG 4400, has an upgrade that improves hte reception by lowering the signal leval that is needed before switching to Analog).

This is not limited to just Sprint, I have heard many different cdma providers give this explanation to their customers.
