Default Nightmare on Elm (Samsung) St.

Here we go again. I upgraded my wife's original Galaxy phone to Froyo about a year ago (and man it was a huge headache). This time I'm trying to upgrade my Infuse from Froyo to Gingerbread per an announcement from ATTicon (link at bottom).

Kies installed correctly but when I launch and come to the screen where the upgrade button is supposed to available, it is greyed out. The only difference I see is that in my instance of the program, for "Firmware Version" instead of displaying "Upgrade available," I see "unregistered version."

So I setup a chat with Sammy. She said i needed to have debug mode enabled (Settings, Applications, Development). When I did that, the option to turn on Kies upgrade doesn't appear on the phone. When debug is off, it does appear. She told me to uninstall & reinstall Kies. That makes no sense, but that is the step that I am at. I've now put at least an hour into this. More to come.

I'll watch your adventures closely. I'm collecting downloads toward the 2.3 upgrade for the Galaxy S Captivate (and getting my nerve up!).

It got to be too late to post. I followed the first advice to uninstall and reinstall the Kies Mini package. (BTW, I forgot that i did not have to re-download the package. When I noticed two downloads of the same package I realized that the install was still available. So if you have the same situation, remember you don't need to re-download--that takes quite a while.)

I noticed that when I put the phone in debug, I would not be prompted to select Kies (upgrade) option. Here is how....
I read further (to the end of the instructions) to discover that in order to use debug mode AND be able to put phone in upgrade mode, the following 2-step process needs to be done:

1. Settings / Applications / USB settings / Kies (select)
2. Settings / Applications / Development / USB debugging (engage)
(Remember to undo both settings after the upgrade.)

Unfortunately, that advice was NOT successful. I ended up spending another 45 minutes on chat and was told to wait 24 hours until trying the upgrade again. I still am not convinced the diagnosis given me about the error message: "unregistered device" is correct.

I still need to backup some data anyway, so I need to take care of that first.

BTW, for other Infuse owners, please note that the free install of Angry Birds will be removed with the update. That's no problem for me because i never played it.

I'll post again when I am successful in the upgrade. I still need to wait until end-of-day before I can try again.

After doing more research on what (exactly) I'll gain with Gingerbread, I decided that the losses were greater than the gains. I have at least 2 valuable apps that are no longer available on the apps store (or anywhere else) that I just don't want to give up. There are no substitutes available.

Here is what AT&Ticon Sammy Infuse users gain:
Update to Gingerbread 2.3.6
Improved Copy and Paste functionality
Redesigned Multi Touch Software Keyboard
Download manager for long running HTTP downloads
Improved power management and application control
Notification Shade: "Flight Mode" added ("Silent" removed)
New Fonts options added include Choco Cooky, Cool Jazz, Rosemary
Keyboard Changes: Android Keyboard with Wider Spaced keys and Quick Keys at the top
New Widgets: The name of the content provider will be listed on the widget list along with the widget name. Previously only the widget name was provided.
New Widget: Traffic (Android) added to list of available widgets
Menu Changes/New Apps: Downloads and Google Books added new, Promotional pre-load of Angry Birds removed*.

Please, what are the two unavailable apps you depend on? I'm not that far along.

Hi CoTech:

Its 11:15pm and I'm so tired I can only remember one of them. It is an app that provides me a complete Bible translation as a downloaded & formatted, searchable text. The particular translation is not featured by other Bible version apps due to copyright. In fact, I think that is probably what killed this app., copyright infringement. The app was not offered by the original translation committee / publishing firm. Whoever made the app acted in violation of that copyright laws but I appreciated having it available for my research, study, & speech development. Although I use some 20 Bible translations in preparing speeches, this particular one is a favorite of mine. (I'm so tired, I almost forgot the mention: the translation is known as "The New World Translation," published by Jehovah's Witnesses.)

I researched Youtube for videos on backing up apps. There is one that does that, but I am not sure if doing so will be possible after upgrading the OS. I am going to post elsewhere (probably under Android) to see if anyone knows how to manually backup specific apps.
