I just got the Samsung A310, and I also bought Snapsynce and Verizon wireless kit(software to install on the laptop to connect to internet) and the cable. I tried to connect to internet through the laptop using the A310 cell phone, and it allows me to connect to my ISP but then it disconnects me. I want to know if I have to subscribe to the extra $7.95 monthly charge at Verizon for internet service? You see, I don't want to surf the internet on the actual cell phone, I just want to use my cell phone to call my ISP(www.vei.net) that I already pay a monthly fee for. Does anyone know if I can do this, or do I have to upgrade my Verizon service for the extra amount every month? Logically it appears to me that on my home computer I use my regular phone to call my ISP and connect to the internet, then why couldn't I call the same number on my cell phone and connect to internet? Can anyone help? Thanks! |

Hey, Johnny. First of all, congratulations on your A310 purchase. It's a great phone... Second, you should be able to connect to your ISP with your A310 just like you would through any other modem. I don't have the Verizon Wireless kit, but I do have a data cable with the Samsung USB driver from FutureDial. I haven't actually tested it as a modem (not exactly what I bought it for), but from what I can tell, once you install the cable and driver, you can access your phone exactly like you would a modem. So, theoretically, you should be able to take whatever program you were previously using to connect to your ISP, and point it at the COM port for your phone instead of your other modem, and vwalla! it should connect without any problems. Now, remember that I haven't tried any of this. I just know that my phone looks exactly like a modem to my computer and I've been able to use the old modem AT commands (like ATD to pick up the phone) to communicate with the phone and they seem to work just fine for me... I'm not sure how the FutureDial and Verizon kits differ, but my FutureDial cable seems to work. |

hi guys, I was just wondering and i'm sure you can answer this for me Hideo. How much does that kit cost and can it be used on a desktop computer? Also, how good is the connection to the ISP through the cell phone? Deos it increase download speeds? Are there any advantages to this other than its doesn't tie up the phone line? Thanks. On a side note, my A310 will be here today. It should have been here yesterday but I guess USPS dosen't know what 2 day shipping means. |

Hideo, I just got my A310 in the mail today. So far I really like it, I just had one question. Is there anyway to turn the exteranl black light on? When i open the phone it doesn't come on. When I press the voulume buttons on the side it doesn't come on. Whats the trick?? The only way I got it to come on was when I plugged the charger into it. Thanks.

Well, let me see if I can answer your questions in order... 1) How much does the kit cost? - Well, if you just want basic modem-type function, you can get a data cable from FutureDial for around $30. It comes with a Samsung driver disk that basically turns your phone into a modem just like any other modem. Verizon also sells a kit called the "mobile office" or something like that and it's around $80. To be honest with you, I don't have any experience with the Verizon kit or any information about it other than what's on their website. I wasn't about to pay $80 when all I really wanted was the data cable anyway. If I remember correctly, think that cioni2k said he/she bought this kit though, so you might want to see if he/she knows more about it... (Sorry cioni, don't know your gender...not that it really matters... ) 2) Can the kits be used with a desktop PC? - Sure, as long as it has a USB port. In fact, I'm using my FutureDial cable with my desktop PC because I don't even own a laptop. 3) How good is the connection? - Don't really know this one for sure either since I have a cable modem and don't dial-up to an ISP any more. However people have been reporting that it has speeds around that of a 14k modem. Verizon advertises that it's much faster, but I'm not sure I really believe them since their statistics are undoubtedly an "ideal situation" type thing as in "...perfect atmospheric conditions, nobody else on the network, Saturn is aligned with Venus, etc"... 4) Does it increase download speeds? - Download speeds in general? As far as I can tell just from seeing messages on here, it's not much faster (and the chances are that it will actually be slower) than any land-line modem you have... 5) Are there any advantages other than that it doesn't tie up your land line? - Besides the fact that you can hook it up to a laptop and have true "roaming internet", there aren't any advantages that I can see, but more than likely I'm just dense... Hope that answers your questions. Unfortunately, I bought my data cable specifically for the purpose of hacking the phone to upload ringers, back-up my phonebook etc. Using the phone as a modem to connect to an ISP is one area where I just don't have much experience. I know some of the other members on here have though, so hopefully they'll chime in here... Bueller?... Bueller?... |

Hi guys; FYI; I bought the Verizon Mobil Office kit ($82) & used it to connect my A310 to my desktop. Their software works great, the Samsung acted like a modem, with TX/RX bars while surfing. I turned off the graphics & it gave me some decent speed for email & that sort of things. Mind you, you get a freebe at 14.4 (other than your own airtime). If you want faster speed, then the same phone can be used with their Express Network (anywhere from $35 to 99/month unlimited) and you get a theoretical 153 kps speed, in actuality about 60-70. Mind you, the phone overheats & since you cannot charge it at the same time, don't count on web-surfing all night long. For whatever reason I sold the Mobil Office kit at eBay & ordered a Futuredial cable. Now I'm waiting for my new laptop to test it with...actually I really liked the Verizon software so much that before selling I made..errr back-up copies (he,he) |
