FWIW, I sent an email request to Samsung asking if it was possible to change the ring tones on the A310. Here is the response that I got back: Quote:

I Have this phone too and I have a few questions. Can the Samsung A310 download anything from the computer? (screensavers, games,?) If yes, How? and I only had the phone for a day. and called twice. but when the phone call went over 5 minutes it stopped the phone call. why? |

Here are some facts of the A310... 1) It is not capable of downloads at all. Probably never will be. 2) the data cable for this phone is to use it as a wireless modem connection 3) resetting the phone through the security menu usually resolves minor issues such as the phone cutting off calls. Bond007: Actually, I believe that after looking at the dump of AT commands and results from the A310 that it is capable of downloading ringtones. Now, whether we'll ever be able to figure it out or not is another question, but it definitely has 4 or 5 slots for user ringers in it's memory, and 4 slots for user animations/screen savers. You can see the dump at: http://webpages.charter.net/hideo_a3...atcommands.txt If you look at the results from the at#PMGLG? and at#PUGSN? commands, they clearly show animation slots named "Down imageX", and ringer slots named "TimbreX" which currently don't show up on the phone as it stands now... If you have some concrete information showing that these are unusable, I'd be glad to see it so we all don't continue to waste our time trying to hack our phones... Otherwise, I'd say that the evidence suggests that the A310 hardware does support downloading of ringers and animations, but that it's rather Verizon that doesn't support it... QTGuRL: As far as your question about the phone dropping your calls, that sounds like a network connection problem. It may be your phone, but it may also be the network wherever you were at. I've never heard of an A310 dropping calls of a certain length before, and in fact I've held hour-long conversations on mine with no problem. I'd say it's a fluke, but if it continues to happen, I guess I'd talk with your Verizon rep about it... |

Actually you can download your contacts from MS Outlook to your Samsung A310 in addition to using it as a modem. I bought the SnapSync software off www.futuredial.com and installed it today. The software is easy to use and works perfectly. I've heard some complaints on this forum about its compatability with the Sprint PCS Samsung A500, but as far as working with the Verizon A310, it's great! No luck as of yet on the ringtones, though. If anyone figures it out, they will undoubtedly be lauded the world over as the next potential recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. My friends have nearly hit me for using the "most normal" ring tone (Bell 4) on this phone which still sounds like a bunch of digital marbles being violently hurled around inside of a steel canister...it now permanently sits on vibrate if there's the potential of anyone being within earshot I still can't believe Samsung built a phone as capable and functional as this without a simple ring-ring!! |

A simple RING, RING, RING, RING or Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding like the good old Motorola DPC/Lite days on the A310 would make our days. Forget about GIN, screensavers or personalized ringtones. Verion, can you hear us now! Hello, Samsung! There is gotta be a solution over the horizon somewhere! We will all be a lot happier and I can live without color screen until battery life get better. Otherwise, I'll do the same, slip my A310 in a leather case to protect its case and put on silent/vibrate mode. |

Bells #4 is fine and is close enough to a "real" ringer

There is is a vbrate mode which is easy to turn on and off on the A310. I usually use vibrate if I am not at home. | |

They told me that there was an update in the works to get "normal" ringtones on the phone. No indication of when that would happen. |

If the update to the ringtone is really true and coming soon, then I think there will be a bunch of happy campers (Samsung A310 users) out there. On the other hand, when my A310 goes off in a room, I know it's mine with my distinctive ring choices, same is true with when my boss's A310 goes off - everyone else in the room left just wondering whose phone it is, knowing it's not theirs. As for the TTY/TTD lockcode, it's a special feature designed to work with special phone equipments for the hearing impaired. Even gaining access to it won't help with the quest for a "normal" ringtone. |

The TTY code is #889 or #TTY and as Letitride said, all it does is allow you to set the ports on your phone up for use with special hardware for the hearing impared.

If you're asking about when the software update to get "normal" ringtones on the a310 is coming out, as I said in my original post, Verizon gave me no indication of a firm date when it would happen, just that it would be "soon."
