ringtones vs. message alerts

I am trying to customize my ringtones for entries in my address book. Works like a charm, except that when they send a text message I now get the ringtone. I'd like to have a global text message alert, but custom ringtones. I can't find a way to do this.

Also, I first tried customizing the ringtones by putting folks in categories, which is similar to what I did on my old Nokia, but same problem, I started getting the ringtone when they sent a text message.

Hopefully this is not a limitation of the phone, who wants a ringtone everytime you get a message?
