Default Strange Reception Problem

Hey gang, I have developed a strange reception problem with my 4 month old v3 razor. This all started about a week ago, up till this time the phone has worked flawlessly at home. The problem is that while I can hear the person I'm conversing with, they say I am all broken up and unintelligible. The strange thing is my signal strength meter on the phone is showing that I have a relatively good signal, ~4 bars or so. On top of this, I can hear the other person fine.

My neighbor also has a Razor, also with AT&T, and she said hers always worked fine (She replaced it with a LG Trax about 2 weeks ago).

Now, when I get away from my home, the phone works fine, which initially led me to believe it was a signal problem. But my phone is showing a strong signal so I keep coming back to the phone. I did call at&t and they said they are checking the towers in my area but they think it's a reception problem and not a phone problem.

This is disheartening as my wife has altell and her nokia phone always works from home.

What do you think?? Is my phone the culprit?? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Steve

The phone is most likely the problem. Did anything happen to the phone such as water damage or a nasty drop?

If your neighbor isn't having any problems with AT&T, you should try to get your phome replaced.

Hi Bill, thanks for the reply. The phone has never seen any abuse, as a matter of fact, it doesn't see much use. But as it is my home phone, it has to work. AT&T says it will send me a text message once all their checks are completed.; if it still doesn't work, I'll request a new phone under warranty.

Very strange symptoms though, I would have reasoned that if it was the phone, the problems would occur everywhere..Oh well, I guess that's just how it goes. Thanks again for the reply, you ready for a second term in the whitehouse??

Well that's a very good point and on second thought there is a good chance it may be the network. There might be a problem with the equipment at the site. I can remember every time I drove past one tower everything would echo until the cal was handed off to the next tower. I would hear an echo of everything said in the conversation, but the person on the other end never complained of a bad call.

So the bottom line is there is hope for your phone after all.

razr's have been known for awhile to flat out have problems. they are great phones when working correctly, and horrible when they dont.

unfortunately there are more out there that DONT work good then the ones that DO.

my suggestion is to go ahead and be proactive, stop by an AT&T store and get a new sim card to rule that out, and then ask them for the number to call and do a warranty on your phone. if your neighbor doesnt have a problem and has the same company, then its clearly a phone problem.

hope everything works out, keep us posted.

Hi Eric, I had enough, I called at&t's warranty dept and they had me reseat the battery, said that would do something to the software, then he called me on my phone and said it was indeed breaking up badly. So, they are sending me out a new phone.

I'm totally ignorant about cell phones, but could a bad sim card cause my issues? I thought the sim card just stored my phonebook and preferrences?? Thanks again for the advice.

the sim card also gives you access to the network, so it is possible that if its not doing its job properly you could have problems. if your getting a new phone and you havent had a new sim card in awhile id say go ahead and switch that also, just to go ahead and rule it out. glad to hear that they are taking care of you.

Hi Eric, good info. If they send a sim card in the replacement phone, I'll try that one if I'm still having issues. Thanks again.

Its not the phone. No chance it works well elsewhere and not at home. Its the cell or sector covering your area that has changed. Unless you have some strange newly induced interference within your home area.

Years ago this happened to me on Verizon. My phone would not work within a mile of my home area. I had full signal too. What was later determined was that many numbers were being rejected from my local tower. It was fixed and never happened again. The network guy even stopped by my house.

Hey gang, thanks for all the replies..Here's an update: AT&T called me today and of course they got to hear the problem firsthand. I had 4 bars on the signal meter and heard the technician perfectly, of course she said I was breaking up badly. She said that they did find a problem on one of their towers and supposedly fixed it, but it was very obvious that the problem still exhisted. Also, she did tell me that they had a lot of calls in my area of people with similar problems.

So, as Jerro says, it's probably a problem with at&t. Unfortunately, I got aggrivated and called at&t's warranty dept and they are sending me a new razr (refurbe'd). I'll probably make the switch and at least rule the phone out as the culprit.

The saga continues..thanks for all the advice.

FYI: I have had perfect referbs. Yet I have had referbs that were not as good as what I started with. If the phone works elsewhere and it was me, I would keep it. Otherwise, I hope you get a good one. All the best.
