I have spent many hours trying to figure out how to tether my Motorola RAZR V3m (from Alltel) to my computer to use as a modem to connect to the internet. After much searching in various forums and websites, I was finally able to get it working smoothly and with much simpler steps than it first appeared. In hopes of helping someone else searching for this same information, I am posting the steps I took. For reference, my cell phone service is with Alltel, my phone was bought from an Alltel store, and I am using a mini USB cable to tether the phone to my Toshiba laptop which has Windows XP with SP2 installed. (The USB cable is the same one I use to connect my Sony camera to my computer.) (1) Download the USB Driver Tool from the following website and install it with the phone turned on and connected to your computer with the USB cable: http://www.hacktherazr.com/downloads.html (2) Disconnect your phone from your computer. (3) Install Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) and make SURE that it updates to its current version when you install it (VERY important step). I bought MPT from the following website and used promotion code tech97 to get a 15% discount and was able to download it right away: http://www.bvrp.com/customers/motoro...g/selector.htm (4) Connect your phone to the computer with the USB cable at the point that the installation asks to identify your phone. (5) When MPT is installed and running, it will show an interface of your open phone with a vertical menu bar beside it. Press on the "Internet Connection" button. This will then prompt you to set up your internet connection. Use #777 for the phone number, "yourcellphonenumber@alltel.net" for your username, and "alltel" for the password. (I should mention here that in my previous attempts to get connected, I had already set up a dial-up internet connection for Alltel in Network Connections in the Control Panel, using the "Create a new connection" option. When I pressed the "Internet Connection" button in MPT, it asked me if I wanted to update this connection, and I said "yes". You may be able to set up the connection at this step without needing to have one set up beforehand as I did. But I just wanted to mention the steps as it worked for me, in case it doesn't work otherwise.) (6) I was then able to connect to the internet at a decent speed (133 Kbps) and stay connected, and am now a happy camper. |

Just be careful that you are not violating Alltel's Terms Of Service (TOS) by tethering with EVDO disabled. Or did u force 1x mode? Technically, you are supposed to subscribe to provider's high speed data networks if u are going to tether that connection. I just dont wanna see you get slammed with data charges. Most carriers only monitor their EVDO network, and dont watch the 1x, thats why we can tether for "free" on 1x. Also, keep in mind, this will use your minutes, so nights and weekends, we are good, but during the week before 9pm, it will use your mins. For any one new reading this, this kind of hack is not designed to replace your ISP.

To my knowledge it does not violate Alltel's TOS, like it does Verizon's. It does, however, take your minutes, except for nights and weekends when you have unlimited minutes.

Does this work on the V3c? I have a friend who can't get the CD that came with Alltel to work and she lives out of town and would like this to work. If it does I'll print this off and give it to her to try.

will alltel's national unlimited data for $10 a month cover the airtime for using my alltel razr v3m as a modem or would it still pull from my minutes?
