The article claims it is RAZR based, but it isn't really a RAZR like phone. This will be available for Cingular in the US. Cingular already has UMTS coverage maps shown on their site if you know where to look.

I don't think this will be the first new 3G/UMTS phone for the US market from Motorola. One thing that the UMTS announcement neglects to mention is whether all 15 markets to implement UMTS on a wide scale is which band UMTS/HSDPA will be on. UMTS 1900 is a lot more likely since last I checked UMTS 850 wasn't being pushed until UMTS 1900 is implemented.

I didn't know other countries were starting to use the 2100 band, but per this in the letter to the FCC it is a triband using: This device contains 900 MHz & 1800 MHz GSM, and 2100 MHz WCDMA functions that are not operational in U.S. Territories.

Alright, I'm going to ask a stupid question here, but... Why would the FCC have to approve a phone that will never (at least in its current form) be released in the US, since it doesn't operate on any US cell frequencies?

I think that this will be offered with a different combination of frequencies... like a UMTS 1900 instead of 2100 for the US. And Fire, if I remember correctly, countries outside the US have always used UMTS 2100 and in America it started at 1900. But I could be wrong? |

I guess since it's not something you see or hear alot about, that is why I didn't know Europe used the 2100 band. Thanks both of you for the info & correction.
