If I purchase a quad band phone like a v600 from T-mobile, does it suspend the 850 band from the phone? If I unlock the phone, will the phone be able to pick up the 850/1900 band from cingular?

It should find it, but I don't think it will work. Only the networks that T-mobile has a roaming agreement will work. So if Cingular operates both 1900 and 850 in a market. Let say T-mobile has a roaming agreement for the PCS 1900 network of Cingular in that market, and you are in a spot where you can only pick up 850. You probably won't be able to use the Cellular 850 network since T-mobile would only have an agreement for PCS 1900 network.

T-Mobile does not disable 850 on any of their handsets anymore. It has been like this for at least a year. TMO however does not officially support 850 roaming although there are a handful of small pockets of providers that you can roam on. For example there is an area here in western NY which will allow me to roam on DobsonUS 850.

I just read the post in the Wireless News board http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/showthread.php?t=6442 (T-Mobile CEO comments on AT/WWCA merger, 3G, and 850 roaming) & see they have been doing limited trials of this, but as stated in the thread they have about 1% of the phones with 850 turned on & it looks like they will be offering it for roaming abilities in the future. What's the point of having the 850 band active on your T-Mobile phone? How can you roam on Dobson if T-Mobile doesn't have a roaming agreement with them, official or otherwise?

T-Mobile has tested 850 roaming in a few places, and according to their CEO it is a matter of "when, not if" they eventually offer 850 roaming. No timetable was given, though.

The Nokia 3595 was one of the first handsets out for TMO with 850. | |

The Nokia 6010 also works on 850.
