Default Does T-mobile suspends the 850 band for quad band phone

If I purchase a quad band phone like a v600 from T-mobile, does it suspend the 850 band from the phone? If I unlock the phone, will the phone be able to pick up the 850/1900 band from cingular?

It should find it, but I don't think it will work. Only the networks that T-mobile has a roaming agreement will work. So if Cingular operates both 1900 and 850 in a market. Let say T-mobile has a roaming agreement for the PCS 1900 network of Cingular in that market, and you are in a spot where you can only pick up 850. You probably won't be able to use the Cellular 850 network since T-mobile would only have an agreement for PCS 1900 network.

Usually T-Mobile does Disable the 850 band on phones, Unlocking it will not restore it, You would need to flex the phone to re-activate it.

T-Mobile does not disable 850 on any of their handsets anymore. It has been like this for at least a year. TMO however does not officially support 850 roaming although there are a handful of small pockets of providers that you can roam on. For example there is an area here in western NY which will allow me to roam on DobsonUS 850.

I wasn't aware that they started leaving 850 on in there phones, I have heard up to recently people having to modify there phones to accept 850, maybe they were wrong then?
I just read the post in the Wireless News board http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/showthread.php?t=6442 (T-Mobile CEO comments on AT/WWCA merger, 3G, and 850 roaming)
& see they have been doing limited trials of this, but as stated in the thread they have about 1% of the phones with 850 turned on & it looks like they will be offering it for roaming abilities in the future.

The V600 I bought from a T-Mobile store in September had 850 locked out. It wasn't until I flashed and flexed the phone did it open up that band. It was basically a tri band phone that had the fourth (850) locked out. I think they are starting to not lock the band like they used to, but for the V600 it will have been recently. There has been a Nokia out there for a while that was allowed to roam on 850, I think it was the one that Budney had...

What's the point of having the 850 band active on your T-Mobile phone? How can you roam on Dobson if T-Mobile doesn't have a roaming agreement with them, official or otherwise?

Good point, i guess T-Mobile has to do things on thier end before anything like this would be of value to someone with a Quad Band phone on thier network!

T-Mobile has tested 850 roaming in a few places, and according to their CEO it is a matter of "when, not if" they eventually offer 850 roaming. No timetable was given, though.

T-mobile does is fact have a roaming agreement in place with DobsonUS in some areas and is active in my region. If you call T-Mobile they probably won't acknowledge it but they do have it in certain areas as Matt pointed out.

The Nokia 3595 was one of the first handsets out for TMO with 850.

That is what the article was about by the CEO of T-Mobile, that they have been testing it in some area's of the country, maybe your area is one of the one's they started testing it & why the 3595 had 850 active.
