Default ATT/Cingular coverage for IPhones in Manhattan

I'm awfully tempted to get one of the IPhones as soon as they come out - but really don't want to have to deal with bad signal issues. I have TMobile now, and the signal is pretty decent - I'd hate to give that up.

What's the current state of ATT/Cingular's voice coverage in Manhattan (esp. midtown and the village)? If a large number of users switch networks to get the IPhone, will it likely strain the local network?

Welcome to WA.

I have had both services and I would bet they are comparable in NYC. Although I don't live in Manhattan, I do travel to Long Island fairly often and Manhattan occasionally. You may even get better reception inside buildings by switching to AT&T since they make heavier use of the 850 MHz band, which has better building penetration. This would not be a reason to switch, in my opinion, but if you are happy with T-Mobile coverage, I doubt you'd be disappointed by AT&T anywhere in the NYC area.

Also, even if the iPhone is a hit, I doubt the number of switchers will be noticeable on the network. This will be an expensive device, after all. Besides, Apple's manufacturing capacity may not be all that great for this phone, and there are already rumors of initial shortages.

I'd be interested to hear what other WA folks have to say, but my advice would be that if you can afford the iPhone and can get your hands on one, go for it!!

I highly doubt you would have a lot of signal problems with ANY provider in manhattan.

Don't worry. They'll have enough inventory in a couple of months from all the returned units, refurbs, etc.

Nothing like some direct honesty.
