Anyone in Susquehanna Pa area? Area code 18847? Do any cell providers have coverage up that neck of the woods? None of the coverage maps seem to say so.

I currently have Cingular and I know their coverage drops out just past the Gibson area by 81.

Any Nextelicon or Verizonicon users up that way?

    Thanks for any help,

    Mike

It seems you can get Cingular at the top of the hill by the Hospital, just above the high school. My wife just called me from there. Which I would presume to mean that a signal is near enough by that something like a booster or amplifier might help out. Anybody have any suggestions for something that might help in this situation?

    Thanks for all the replies!

Yeah.. I see that as far as the map is concerned.. but my wife was just able to use her phone to call me from the top of a hill there near the hospital. We have Cingular, so there must be a GSM signal barely making it there.

It all depends on how far you are from where she made the call, to tell if a wireless repeater or amp. would help you. There are numerous makes out there with people saying Wilson is the best for repeaters/amps. and I am assuming you are looking to use it at your house. Figure between $600 & $800 for a good unit.

Also one of the Mountains can be what's totally blocking your signal & no repeater/Amp can help if that is the reason for lack of signal for you.

I'm looking for one in the car actually. She'll be traveling to the town for work and she looses signal from a little past Gibson PA heading up Rt92 N. Like I mentioned, she got a signal at the top of a hill there just as you're coming into town near the Hospital. I'm hoping that would mean that an Amp could help out and possibly get her a signal all the way up Rt92. But I'd hate to spend a couple hundred bucks and find out it doesn't.

I found a some Wilson repeaters for about 250 bucks and Wilson boosters for about 200. Just not sure if I want to shell out the cash for one yet.

Can these amps really increase your range by up to 60 miles as some of them claim? I would think if they could, it should do the trick... even if its actually more like 30 miles or something.

I believe Verizonicon will work in that area. There is CDMA service there because my Alltel phone works there when I drive back home to New England. I believe CellOne of NEPA owns a CDMA system there.

Yeah, I've heard now that Verizonicon works but is a little sketchy up in that area from someone who lives up there. So I'm thinking that theres a chance I might need a booster with Verizonicon as well. But, if a repeater would get us working with Cingular, and I can get one for 200 bucks or so, that might still be a cheaper alternative for me then paying an ETF for two phones and switching providers right now, then still possibly needing to get a booster. I have a year yet on my contract.

Cingular's website actually offers one of the Wilson Electronics boosters, albeit for a lot more money than you can get one on ebay though. I see theres a shop of some sort listed for New Milford that sells Wilson repeaters. Maybe I can get up there and see if they have first hand experience using them in the area.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Still feels like there is some hope.

If Cingular show's one that they sell, then I would say that would be the Make & Model you would want, since they have basically approved it's use by selling it.
I would go to that dealer in New Milford & see how much he wants for it & his experience and do some internet shopping for that unit to find the best price out there.

The only service that will work at this time in this area is Verizonicon or phones capable of roaming off Verizonicon's towers. They recently put a tower in and I'm hoping cingular will piggy back off the tower someday. GSM signals will come through but only in certain areas..the hospital on the hill, prospect street park in susquehanna and on top of oak hill in oakland, but it is very scattered.

Verizonicon coverage maps do not show towers. Typing in the zip code on their coverage locater indicates 18847 has coverage.

A Cell Tower should be in the Same Town
    to Be Effective.
If you look at that Verizonicon Map it will tell
you that there's No Coverage in Susquehanna.

Does the name of the town determine the effectiveness of the tower or its placement?

It is plain to see that coverage in this area may be spotty. However anyone who follows cell phone forums should know by now that coverage maps of all carriers are not accurate and should not be relied on to determine coverage.

What should be noted is that Verizonicon's coverage locater indicates that the zip code is covered. They will sell phones to people in that zip code. Now that's not to say the coverage will be good but that zip code is covered.

If coverage maps are to be believed the cingular coverage map has a post it pin almost at dead center of zip code 18847 yet the legend on the map indicates only moderate coverage.

I am from PA. However, I am now living Canada. You were the only person to whom I could direct my question. I will be attending my High School 50th Year Senior Class Reunion next month. I would like to know if there is Bell Mobility Service from Pgh. to Philadelphia, Pa. Thank you.
I am sorry that I can not help you with your problem.

Apparently the Verizonicon tower everyone keeps talking about must either be there now or going in sometime soon. The wife just got a newsletter from the PSEA offering discounted Verizonicon service for teachers at Susquehanna due to the new tower they are putting in.

So now, I have to decide between paying an early termination fee or getting a repeater. Too bad it wasn't Nextelicon, I kind of miss my Nextelicon on the job.

    Thanks everybody.

And Chemsdad... if you are taking mostly major highways all the way down, you should be covered for the most part. You may hit small dead spots here and there, but if you stick to the major highways, they should be scarce. What is bell mobility? GSM or CDMA?
