Default Activating Phone on Verizon

If I already have a Verizon account and I acquire a new handset, either through eBay or from a friend, can I just call Verizon CS and activate over the phone? Is it an automated system? Must I/should I call from the handset being activated?

Thanks for any info.

Call customer care from a landline phone and they will walk you through it. All they need to do is the ESN swap on their end and have you dial a couple of numbers on the phone and the phone will be active and ready to go.

Yep, call them and have the battery cover off so you can read them the ESN. Provided the phone is not on their watch list (stolen), they'll tell you to hang up and wait about 10 minutes, then dial *228. An automated voice will ask you to select one of two options. When asked , you hit "1" and shortly thereafter, the phone is programmed, to include the new number for the phone.
