no because Cingular does not have any 850 licenses in the NYC market.

The 850 MHz licenses are held by A: ATT and B: Verizon. That's both of them.

Which means if Tmobile doesn't go all out to optimize there GSM network in NYC then whe will never have a good GSM netwok in the city.

dru, isn't att gsm moving into the city? That's what I heard anyway when I went to check out their plans. I could be totally mistaken though.

Yes it is BUT its GSM 1900....a very poor choice for the techinicaly most chalenging cell phone market in the US.

1900 mhz doesn't penetrate buildings very well. Can you name another city with more buildings closer togethey than my home? not in the US at least. They should have deplkoyed GSM 850 but they are not. Also alot of people hgave returned there ATT GSM phones cause like me they need there phone to work just about everywere and ATT GSM doesn't.

dru, i live in the city as well. I understand baout the problems with 1900, but tmobile is 1900 as well. So the city won't get great GSM coverage unless t-mobile OR att ups their tower coverage, since both are basically in the same boat(though granted tmobile is more established in the gsm market). Though, I would expect ATT to fix their GSM quicker than I would think tmobile would...I get good coverage with cingluar gsm (t-mobile's towers), so I'm not complaining, though I spend most of my time uptown. I'm sure there are quite a few holes

there are a few holes but for the most part cingular/t-mobile has a good network going in the NYC market. its does suk that they wont be deploying gsm 850 here cause that would be the smart thing to do. but without the liscences they r screwed
