Default Switch Carriers and Take your Number with You!

Just talked to ATTicon Wireless about my new GSM service and they told me that they are upgrading their systems so that if you switch carriers you will be able to take your number with you. If this is in fact true then it's great for the consumer. Anyone else heard about this?

Yes its true..however there will still be restrictions such as carriers can "hold" the number if there are any outstanding balances. There are others restrictions as well...Also carriers are just now implementing wireless number portability and it wont actually be availible to consumers until around Novmember 2003.

JayJAy is right, and the carriers are actually fighting it since it will encourage people to switch around more - even though every year one-third of all mobile users in the US switch already!

I think that number mobility will lead to greater competition among carriers (just like long distance carriers). I only hope the FCC would step in if providers fail to offer this service. it is better for the consumer and will only make providers improve their services. Just my $0.02.

It's the FCC that is making it a requirement. The carriers have managed to get a couple of extensions to the deadline.

Well, all I can say is, thank goodness the (Republican) lawmakers in Washington, who now control both Congress and the White House, have acquired the powericon to regulate this! Enough with gridlock -- now we'll see what they really can do without all that unnecessary Democratic interference...

Hey, you're correct. I understand that after they ban abortions, they're going to ban GSM in this country. They are also threatening to enact trade sanctions on all countries that use the GSM system.

Heh, Matt that cracked me up. I (think) you were being sarcastic, and in that case it was funny. Maybe they can manage to destroy Alaska too?! I don't see this as being a positive, just a positive hassle. If I switch, I get a new number, not a big deal. Just send everyone on my calling list a text message informing them of the new number....not hard (businesses though I guess it would be).
