I live in central PA and I want to get a cellular phone. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but I would like a phone without multiple problems. The Verizon dealer promises good service with their America's choice program and the free Kyocera phone that comes with it. Any comments?

Most carriers are going to be the same and most are going to have the same issues/problems.. All carriers have drop calls, some dead zones, and so forth. While one carrier will work great in one area of town, another wont, and so on. Most carriers have a 14 day return period in witch you can take the phone and cxl service for full refund..all but the activation fee. If the phone doesn't work where you need it to within that 14 days, dont keep thinking it will, take the phone back, and try another carrier. Some carriers even have loner phones to take home with you for a few days to try it out.
Also when selecting a plan, its always better to choice a plan with more minutes then you'll think you'll need and scale back after a month or two when you have a better idea of your usage. here is an example of why...and the numbers are based on Sprint service plans because i know them

example
45.00 will get you 500 anytime unlimited nw
60.00 will get you 800 anytime unlimited nw

Lets say you go with the 500 min plan and go over your minutes just 38 minutes....that 38 minutes will cost you 15.00 extra dollars. You have just hit the break even point for an 800 minutes plan. Now, lets look at saving...if you are on the 500 minute plan and actually use 800 minutes. your extra charges would be 120.00 bucks. so that 500 minutes plan would cost you 45.00 for the plan, 120.00 for the extra minutes which = 165.00 dollars. Ouch! However if you would have gone with the 60.00 /800 min plan thats all you would have spent..your savings 105.00 bucks.
Now lets say you use the phone for a few months and don't use near what you thought and use around 400 minutes.. you can always call and change your plan down to the 500 minute plan....and your loss would only be 30 bucks. To me i would rather gamble the 30 bucks over the 105.00

AT&T has a 30-day "buyer's remorse" period. And it's true, most carriers have similar problems.

If you're in Central Pa., you'll deal with hills and valleys and occasionally tall buildings, which can affect your signal. Give your phone and your plan a thorough check during the guarantee period. I'd recommend calling or getting online to check your plan after a few days to make sure it was entered correctly. Mine wasn't, and I caught it early enough to change it.
