i visit the lake placid, saranac lake, whiteface, plattsburgh region a few months out of the year. however, i have to sign up for a cellphone in another state, so i was wondering if anyone knew which cellphone carriers get reception in that area. i've heard some people use verizon and cellular one, but that's only a few people. if you know anything about carriers that get service up in the mountains let me know! thanks

AT&T Wireless roams on the Rural Cellular (Cellular One) network in that area, and from some of my customers' experiences have been mixed. Due to the nature of terrain and wireless coverage, I would choose a phone that supports analog (That rules out any GSM provider, Nextel, and many of Sprint's phones). If I had to choose, I would pick AT&T Wireless, Cingular (TDMA), or Verizon. If you are going to choose either ATTWS or Cingular, I would recommend the Nokia 6360 (ATT) or possibly the Motorola 120t (Cingular/soon at ATT). Hope this helps. Rural Cellular -Check out coverage in that area.... AT&T Wireless Cingular Verizon |

I believe that in the Lake Placid area, only Verizon analog is available there. I had AT&T when I visited up there and was roaming on Verizon analog. I was also roaming on Verizon analog while I was taking the ferry boat -- yes I arrived in Burlington, VT and drove to Lake Placid/Adirondacks.

I often go to the Adirondacks and have found that Verizon has the best service in the area. I have Sprint and once I am north of Lake George I go into roam. This is one of the reasons I am switching to Verizon next month. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the terrain plays a big part in that area as far as signal strength goes.
