|  Need to switch service, but which is best?
Hi - I've been trying to figure out the cell services in New York City for the past couple of months now, and I still don't have a clear picture. I currently have Verizon, but my contract is over and I want to know if I can get a better deal. I am currently looking at the following: 1. staying with Verizon on a month-to-month basis until a really good deal comes up; 2. switching to Cingular or; 3. Switching to T-mobile. I've heard that AT&T generally has very poor service overall, and poor customer support as well. Thing is, I have no clue as to how these services compare in NYC (specifically north Brooklyn where I live). which of these has the best overall service? Best connection? Excessive dropouts? Customer Support? Best phones and coverage? I know virtually nothing about Cingular, but they have some decent deals right now, except they require a 2 year contract (I think). Cingular and T-Mobile have the same coverage in NYC since they share towers at the moment. Cingular (and I'm guessing T-Mobile too) is going to launch more towers as time goes on. For the moment, I believe Verizon and Sprint fight for the best overall coverage in the city, and especially surrounding areas. In NYC there really is no BAD carrier, but avoid the GSM carriers for now if you need to travel 50-100 miles out of NYC (in any direction). T-Mobile has the best deals as far as plans are concerned with anytime minutes, but no free nights (just weekends). If I was in your spot, unless I was really unhappy, I'd stick with Verizon. They have reliable coverage and good plans for NYC. |

I happen to disagree with you and anyone else who says AT&T has poor service in NYC. I have AT&T for the past couple of months and have not have any problems. I get service in places that i have not gotten with sprint. And as for there customer support i have had nothing but very good service with them. But like evertything else everyone is entitled to their opion. But if I were you and have not had a problem with your current service why switch.

You might want to just stick with Verizon Wireless. They seem to be the best in the NYC area from what I've heard.

Verizon is the most expensive carrier out there. Compare these 2 plans: Verizon $35 America's Choice 300 minutes Free Long Distance 4000 Nights/Weekends You have to BUY the phone 2 year will waive activation fee AT&T National Network $34.99 500 minutes 30000 Nights/Weekends Free Long Distance Phones are free, some are free and have Mail-in Rebate (free $$$ for signing up) 2 year will reduce activation fee to $10, give you unlimited nights/weekends and give you 500 mobile to mobile minutes. To me, AT&T is just better deal. They are launching GSM service now, which will have unlimited minutes anytime with 2 year 99.99 plan. They plan to make $39.99 GSM plan with 1000 anytime minutes. In my store, I always encourage people not to take Verizon, since it's a ripoff. |

I think he also forgot to mention that it is a limited - much limited - GSM network and the 500 mobile to mobile is local, not national.

AT&T's National Network map is kinda spotty, but well thought out. It covers major cities in every state and areas around them, highways, etc. Not sure about GSM coverage, I am in NYC, and they supposedly only turned on the GSM signal just today, so no clue there. When I sell National Network plan, I pretty much explain the person that this is a great local plan which has LD and no need to get into 2 year commitment, and it's flexible if you have to travel. |

One important note about AT&T's $39.99/1000 anytime GSM plan: NO N/W minutes. I would not touch AT&T GSM yet anyway, unless you'll stay in major metro areas only. Wait a year or 2. I think Verizon is best for this person. AT&T's National Network plan, while a great value, can't hold a candle to the coverage of Verizon A/C, Cingular Preferred Nation, or Sprint. |

Ther is ATT's National network and ATT's Digital one rate network. Only the Digital one rate network comes close to Verizon when it comes to coverage and if you look at the plans on the Digital one rate network, they are more expensive than verizons plans (60/month for 450 minuites being the lowest costing). When you travel around the North East like i do only the Digital one rate network or the Northeast Regional network gives me the coverage i need. Verizons National network however would give me the coverage i need. Hmmm...now if only verizon worked in the basement of my house like ATT does[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

FYI, AT&T National Network $34.99 plan has 500 anytime minutes, unlimited N&W minutes, roaming and LD included inside the AT&T Network, plus 250 Mobile to Mobile national minutes per month for life. Also, the contract is Two Years. If you want to get the one year contract then it is 3000 N&W minutes (not 30,000...LOL!) instead of unlimited, and no mobile to mobile minutes.

Ain't that the truth!!! One month I used 41,328 Night & Weekend minutes. If I only had 30,000 I would have been charged for the additional 11,328 minutes! That would have cost me an additional $3,964.80 that month - OUCH!!! I don't have that kind of change lyin' around - see what I'm sayin?

You can go with the T-mobile 600 min national plan for 39.99 and for 6.99 more per month get unlimited nights and weekends. It comes to $47 but you are getting alot of peak minutes and it beats paying the .40 cents a minute overage on verizons $35 plan which only gives you 300 peak minutes. Plus as far as getting a new phone you will pay less or get a decent phone free with t-mobile vs most all the time paying for a decent phone with verizon.

T-Mobile is good in NYC, but not so great in South Jersey, and spotty/nonexistant once you go up north of NYC.

Would someone please issue a beatdown to these two particular anonymous posters. By the way (I can't believe I just did this, but I'm in a totally dead mall today and customers are an endangered species): Assuming a 12 hour off-peak time, which is effectively more than ANYONE offers anymore, the most time you could use would be 28,080 minutes, or 468 hours. Now, who's going to sit on their phoone for 12 hours/night and not hang up all weekend long? |

LOL....can we take a joke as a joke? By the way, Mr Escobar... I am not sure who wants go with a company that's building their system now. I wanna go with a company that has ALREADY built their system and the system has matured. That's how you get the best coverage.

I got 500 anytime min + unlimited N&W + 250 national M to M min on a one year contract. I just called AT&T and told them that I like that plan but do not want two years contract. They were really good about it. I signed my wife and myself one year each. But I already have account with AT&T so I don't know if they can do that for new customers. But you can ask. |
