Default Which provider best for my situation

Okay, I am finally going to get wireless phone service. This will be my first wireless phone. I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan. I am trying to decide between Verizon, Cingular, and T-Mobile. The kicker is, in a few weeks, I will be going on a trip to Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia. I would like to go with a service provider that will allow me to use my phone in those countries. Which provider/phone combination do you folks recommend? Thanks for your help.

Long-term, get Verizon service here in New York.

Short-tem, rent a GSM phone for a few weeks over seas.

For a world phone your options are:

T-mobile and Cingular wireless.

Choose the one that has the best plan for your needs.

For international roaming- both give you the ability to roam internationally. I know that t-mobile is usually the least expensive option at 99cents a minute.

I always thought that Japan had a wireless system that was incompatible with all the others even GSM.

My suggestion that you get a 3 band GSM phone and then purchase pre-paid sim cards for use in Hong Kong and again in Australia. That way you'll have a local number for the area, helpful if you expect people to call you back. Otherwise if you have a U.S. number, they will have to call the U.S. even though you're right there in Hong Kong.

The problem is that Japan is totally incompatible with everyone else in the world. Australia has some CDMA and some GSM, I believe. Better to just get a prepaid in each country.

Quick question, what's PDC and I thought Japan used wCDMA?, or am I thinking of something else?

Edit: Doesn't NTT DoCoMo use wCDMA?
