I have cingular in CA, but will be moving in July to Newark, NJ and NYC area. I would like to know if and how I can use my current Ericsson T28z phone and get a new service provider. What wireless companies can use my phone? Or is it pointless to try to use this old phone since I can get a better one for free with a mid-priced plan starting with a new company?
Thanks for your help.

Technically, I think that Voicestream (another GSM carrier) in your new home area should be available. Logistically, you'll have to ask them if there will be any concerns of theirs to your using your current phone. It may be just a matter of getting another SIM card. Not sure. While here in CA, speak to Cingular and ask if there is anything you'll need from them.

(CDMA and TDMA phones have codes that "home" (lock) the phone to a certain carrier. I don't know if that is programmed on the SIM card of elsewhere on GSM phones.)

From what I understand GSM cards are locked too. For instance only Voicestream SIM cards will work in Voicestream Phones. Most likely if you put a Voicestream SIM card into a Cingular Wireless phone it won't work.

Hey Kevin I just thought of something Cingular Wireless is currently working on putting a network in that area by sharing towers with VoiceStream right? Alright by July, Cingular Wireless might have service in that area and you can just keep the current phone you have and maybe switch to a NY local number.

To add to TNDan, Cingular was supposed to have the network ready by the end of this year. Doesn't look like it is happening so definatly by July it should be ready. And, Anonymous, are you moving to Newark or a surrounding town? I am about 15 Miles from newark now and I used to live 2 towns away.
