Default Cingular in Essex and Middlesex County NJ??

I was wondering how Cingular GSM was in essex and middlesex county, specifically in Montclair and at Rutgers- which is the New Brunswick and Piscataway area. I wanted to know how good Cingular GSM is with building penetration. What phones would help me get the best reception? Should I look to another service? I have one month left on my ATT contract and I want to try another service, as I have been with ATT for about 4 years now. Also, I wanted to know how long porting takes or if it is an easy process?

Thanks for your help

Default Cingular in Essex and Middlesex County NJ??

Essex and Middlesex Counties are two different license areas. Cingular uses both 800Mhz and 1900Mhz in Middlesex but only 1900Mhz in Essex. I haven't visited the Montclair area too often so I am not familiar with how the coverage is there. In Middlesex I know it is pretty good, although in remote residential areas it can be bad. I would say stick to your AT&T service. They are allowing free roaming on Cingular in so many areas, it really makes AT&T coverage better because with Cingular you won't be able to roam on AT&T in NJ. Besides, after next year, it will really make no difference since both networks will belong to Cingular.

About phone reception on Cingular, I would say the best phone is the Sony Ericsson T616 followed by the Motorola V400. Porting a number can take anywhere from hours to a few days depending on whether there are complications or not.

In the dorm bulidings, Cingular as adaquate service to get a signal...not great, but enough to get a call if you leave your phone by the window... (Tmo does not get service regardless of where you are in teh dorms, but has service on douglass campus where verizon is lacking. Verizon gets better service then Cingular in dorms and around all the other campus.) Around the campus, cingular again has decent service (just not great--the service is a bit to patchy for my likeing.). Att does swtich to Cingular, so the service for att is basically the same as cingular.... Sprint craps out every where.

I will most likely upgrade to ATT GSM today, they are offering a great plan and I don't think I can pass it up.

$49.98 for two lines
1000 Anytime Minutes
Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
Unlimited Night and Weekend

I think you will be happy with AT&T GSM in those area's. I also like the new plan they started yesterday with the 39.99 giving you 1000 Anytime Mins, Unlimited N&W, And Unlimited M2M as well as Long distance in your home area, it's a great deal.
