Heard a story on the WB11 news this morning that Cingular has gotten themselves a block of 212 numbers and have been giving them out to new mobile customers. The only issue is that many of these new customers live in Jersey. Anyone know if there's any truth to the claim? Having a 212 number on your cell would be pretty neat. |

Last time I checked, the 212 area code was totally maxed out. I would be surprised if there's any truth to this story. (After all, look at the source - WB11? Come on.)

It's totally true..... I've given out 7 (212) numbers this week, and not only with Cingular, but T-mobile as well. It shocked the hell out of me the first time I saw it. I requested a NYC area code for a customer thinking it would be (646), but a (212) area code popped up.

so i guess the significance with 212 area code is nothing more than there are alot of 212 numbers?

Maybe the 212s are recycling from Manhattan residents who have been porting their home phone numbers over to their mobile service? (Old mobile number, a 212, gets dropped in favor of the home number.) Just an idea. Hell, these days, I'm surprised people aren't auctioning 212's off on eBay.

Most likely they are recycled internal numbers, so when a cingular customer leaves cingular (obviously without porting their number away) cingular sits on the number for 60 or 90 days then its available again for them to give to another new customer. Thay way there is always a small chance you can get a 212 number. Same thing happened in philly with 215 cell phone numbers. But I know some lady got my old number cause my freidns always tell me she's a really b1tch when they call her by accident.

Saw the story on the news last night. A Cingular rep says that they ran out of the original block, but they are definitely getting more. They'll even take orders for a 212 and will give it to you when it pops up. She said if you can order in the next few days, they can practically guarantee that they will get you a 212. It's limited to NYC and north Jersey residents/billing addys...... |

Anyone know if Cingular will pay your early termination fee if you decide to switch to them?

Probably not as a specific dollar for dollar deal, but you could help convince yourself that they are doing that by getting a good deal on a phone and waiving the activation fee. |

Re availability of 212 numbers: I see no reason Cingular couldn't get them. It's likely that Cingular has gotten thousands blocks in NPA-NXXs assigned to other carriers...there are a lot of CLECs in NYC and many of them have very few numbers assigned, and under FCC rules CLECs have had to "return" unused NPA-NXXs and thousands blocks for reassignment to other carriers. -SC
