Default analog/trimode terms?

yay, i'm going to get an lgvx6000 tomorrow~! anyways, i was just wondering what the term "analog" meant. I know the gist of it: the output is "analogous" to what is inputed from the other side, and something digital is converted into 1's and 0's; however, people are saying that the vx6k is only digital..and this presents problems in analog areas? i just don't get it... also what's with terms like "tri mode" and "dual band"? any leads or referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default analog/trimode terms?

analog is an old and probably the most widespread cellular technology in the US today. however it is very limited as to its capabilities and will not be around much longer as the carriers are going all digital. the vx6000 is not analog capable so in areas where there is no digital coverage but it may have analog your phone will not work. tri mode means the phone is capable of amps, gsm and tdma like the gait phones. tri-band means a world phone capable of 1900mhz, 1800mhz and 900mhz. dual mode means the handset is capable of amps and tdma, or amps and cdma, or gsm and tdma, you get the jist. dual band means the phone is capable of 2 frequencies like 850, 1900 or 900, 1900, ect.

Default analog/trimode terms?

Actually, it works like that for the most part, however there are some differences.

First, you need to understand the concept of a "Mode". A mode is simply a combination of frequency band and modulation type. The frequency bands are 800 (aka 850), 900, 1800 and 1900. The modulation type is either TDMA, GSM or CDMA. Combine a frequency band with a modulation type and you have a "mode." For instance, CDMA 800 is one mode, CDMA 1900 is another mode and TDMA 1900 is another mode. So, when you see a phone that is tri-mode, it normally has two frequency bands and two modulation types. Most tri-mode phones include two digital modes and one analog mode, for instance, TDMA 800, TDMA 1900 and Analog.

Dual-mode phones normally have one digital mode and one analog mode, either in one or two frequency bands. Examples of Dual-Mode phones are:

TDMA 800 and AMPS
CDMA 1900 and AMPS

Note that AMPS is the same as Analog and it is ALWAYS in the 800Mhz band.

Dual-Band phones are simply phones with one modulation type on two different bands. Many GSM phones are dual band.

GSM 900 and GSM 1800
GSM 850 and GSM 1900

Some GSM phones are tri-band:
GSM 900, 1800 and 1900

GAIT phones are not considered tri-mode. They are considered Multi-Mode or Multi-Network.

Although GSM 900 and GSM 1800 are also technically two different modes, the "dual-mode" term is not used here because it is using the same technology (GSM) for both bands.

Also, note that in North, Central and South America, 800 and 1900 are most commonly used. The rest of the world uses 900 and 1800.

Bobolito ...

I've got to tell you ... I knew the difference between analog, digital, tri-mode, dual-band, etc. But, I never would have been able to describe it the way you did!! This is one of the best posts I've seen. I hope everyone gets a chance to read it.

Thanks!
