I will be relocating to the Long Island area. I currently have Sprintpcsicon in Northern VA, which works great. However, I have heard that it does not work well at all in Long Island. Anyone has experience with Sprintpcsicon or any other provider in that area that could share?

    Thanks!

I have used VZW, Spr & AT &T In that area, (Nassau County,) & I would have to say VZW is Far Ahead of the others, especially Sprint/Tmobile.
VZW is usually full strength across most of the shoreline Beaches, from Atlantic Beach-Long Beach-Jones Beach area, where AT &T/SPrint were 1bar or No svc.

Depends where on LI you are going to be.

If it's generally "all over" LI, then your best bet is Verizonicon (some say AT&T TDMA if you spend a lot of time in Suffolk). However, I would check by taking trials on T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizonicon (as well as trying your Sprint). I can tell you that I have both Sprint and Verizonicon and have tried AT&T GSM and Cingular (which is the same as TMO here) and no carrier is best everywhere. Sprint works fine for me everywhere I go (NYC & North Shore, Western Nassau) except in Penn Station. Cingular was surprisingly good, certainly better than AT&T GSM in the same spots; Cingular actually got service in Penn Station, sometimes down to the platform level, AT&T couldn't even get service on the waiting room level. Verizon is best in Penn Station, getting service everywhere, even in the tunnels. In my lecture hall ONLY Sprint gets service.

So it depends. Again, if you don't want to do a trial you're probably best off with Verizon, IMHO.

    FWIW.

I have also heard Verizonicon is the best on Long Island. I am in Huntington right now for a family reunion. I have had no problems with my 8100 with Sprinticon so far. I stayed a few days in Sayville with a relative, he took me to Jones Beach too with the same result. Also coverage has been great every where, including the trip to Atlantic City.

Before you make any carrier changes, try using your Sprinticon phone. If you feel that the service
is not good enough for you, then you can make the switch.I have not had any problems with
Sprinticon anywhere on the island.Good Luck!

A perfect example, is that both me and my friend, doing the stereotypical cell phone thing, were on our cell phones while I drove from stony brook (further east than levittown) all the way to brooklyn. My phone call to my brother lasted the entire 1.4 hours and never lost the connection. My friend's phone with Sprinticon on the other hand, broke up a lot and he had to restart the phone call several times. Cell phone strength on the freeways and expressways are stellar for Verizonicon. When my friend is out east in stony brook with Sprinticon, I usually can't even call him.

I was in Ronkonkoma, Long Island during the weekend and I had my Nokia 6800 phone with me there. I have Cingular GSM and I noticed that I had service and very good reception in many areas on Long Island.

The ONLY area where I did not have any signal on my cell phone was in RONKONKOMA. I was 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away from Lake Ronkonkoma. Some areas in Ronkonkoma had a weak signal while other areas there had NO signal at all.

I drove all the way to Manhattan from Ronkonkoma and I had NO PROBLEM with getting a good signal on my cell phone from anywhere outside of Ronkonkoma and all the way to Manhattan and NYC.

CINGULAR GSM has a really strong signal on Long Island outside of Ronkonkoma and west of Ronkonkoma all the way to Manhattan and NYC.

RonJeremy - Cingular GSM? My grandmother's 3390 used T-Mobileicon when it was available. The only other GSM service was AT&Ticon. When I did has the phone search for networks.

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I currently have a Samsung phone with Sprinticon PCS service. The service really sucks. I am planning to get a new phone and new service. Can any of you recommends what service out there is good for my area (Mastic, Eastern Suffolk)?

    Thanks.

    Chris.

chiwiz - Which Samsung do you have? Some Samsungs are known to have poor RF like the a460 or the N400. Even the a500 can have problems if it has a old software version. Even though I never went that far out on the Island (Ronkankama to the city), I had great service with Sprinticon with my 8100 for two weeks straight (inside buildings too).

I just came back from my trip to levittown with my t-moblie. I can tell you that I had coverage where I went, even underground in Penn station. I used to have sprint and they werent so good, all in all when I needed sprint they were there but never outstanding coverage. My friend also borrowed the phone as well and he said in the house where he was sprint didnt work, Verizonicon didnt work, but T-Mobileicon did. I am extremely happy with T-Mobileicon.

hmmm... not too knowledgeable with that model. Maybe "old" has more to do with the problem.

Good observation! As a matter of fact, T-Mobile is the WORST carrier on the island! Well, at least the message is going across.

Anyway, in my personal opinion, I have had cellular service for 2 years out here on the island and in my opinion I think the best carrier is AT&Ticon (GSM or TDMA, I would go with GSM for better clarity since they've already overlayed all of LI).
