I'll be heading up to D.C. in the fall for college. I was recently up there and had terrible service w/ my T-Mobile 3390. I asked around and heard that Sprint and Verizon carried the best in metro D.C. Verizon's Nationwide plans suit me well, and I am strongly considering signing up for one w/ a t720. If I could get some feedback on Verizon's call coverage in metro D.C. and my choice of the t720 from you experts, it would really be appreciated.

I am no expert on DC, but one of my friends goes to school there. He is currently with T-mobile and cant wait for his contract to end so he can switch to Verizon. From what I have heard from him sprint isnt to bad, but Verizon is the only one that works on the metro. As for a phone, I would say stay away from the T720, it has had many problems in the past, I would go for a VX4400 or A530. Also, since it doesnt sound like you need a phone right away (since school wont start for a few months) you might want to wait a little while and see what new phones verizon releases in the near future.

Nix the T720 go with the VX4400. You can't go wrong with Verizon.

verizon is pretty good in the area. stay away from sprint, its pretty bad in dc, lost of holes and dropped calls. verizon using 800mhz also penetrates buildings better. t-mobile is better in the area than you may think. fairly solid (although not extensive) coverage. verizon is best though, its also the exclusive cellular service that can be used in the subway (Metro).

Yeah also the T720 sucks. Terrible batter, just bad phone. Get an LG if your on Verizon, or Sanyo for sprint. But id go with Verizon and a vx4400 or vx6000 (when out)

I was in DC a couple of months ago had great coverage around George Washington University, and Georgetown, down by the capital and had good coverage in buildings. Just my couple of cents

I never had any bad experiences with Verizon in Washington, D.C. As someone already noted, Verizon is the only carrier to offer service in the subway. My Sprint phone worked all right in D.C., but it's far behind Verizon. My advice is also to stay away from T-Mobile in D.C. They are my third choice for D.C. Good luck. |

Just my two cents. First Cingular (when counting analog and digital) probably has the second best network in DC. Also they have some very attractive plans out there right now. Second, I would say that AT&T has quietly built out a pretty good network in the Washington area.. although the GSM network is still building out. Also, T-Mobile DOES have a good network where they have coverage. For example, a major shopping center is the Fashion Center at Pentagon City and ONLY T-Mobile has transmitters IN the Mall!

AT&T is allright in the area. The GSM coverage I would say is behind that of T-mobile. When you add the TDMA to the GSM it still cannot compete with Verizon. Also...remember how bad TDMA was/is?

I have a Siemens S46 on AT&T so I can (and do) use both the TDMA and GSM networks. The bottom line is when I signed up they were rolling out GSM and I got a special rate. I pay $34.99 a month and get 500 anytime minutes + unlimited nights and weekends anywhere on the AT&T network. Sorry, but I'm in no hurry to pay $5 more to Verizon so that I can fewer anytime minutes just to gain some coverage. |

I'd say Verizon or ATT(digital). ATT has nice plans but crappy data rates. Verizon has better phone choices though and better coverage since ATT is PCS in DC. ATT I am sure will roam on Cingular in places where ATT is dead. I would go with either of those two services if I lived there.

att has both gsm and tdma in dc. i would stay away from it even if the coverage were as good as verizon because its tdma. it wont work well inside and just doesnt have good call quality. and the coverage doenst come near verizon.

Just a quick note on jfg1112. AT&T digital phones will roam on Cingular, but AT&T GSM phones except for the S46 will not ROAM on Cingular. Once Cingular rolls out GSM in Washington the roaming agreements already signed may allow for roaming. Another note is that most of the rate plans AT&T has out now make you pay for roaming. I should know because until September of 2002, I had a old TDMA plan called, "Regional Advantage" and I could roam Anywhere in the Northeast without every paying a roaming fee. That meant I could roam on the Cingular's TDMA and analalog systems. I could even roam on Verizon's analog system while in the Metro. My current S46 has NO analog capability. Plus, while I can still get Cingular TDMA I have to pay everytime as I'm on the "national network" plan. |
