The closer I get, the further away I end up! Sorry, I'm still trying to figure all this out. Switching to VZW at end of month.Live in Northern NJ, travel NY/CT/Maine, mostly. Who feels that trimode is best and who thinks that all digital is better or good enough? Coverage locator for the areas look pretty well saturated with digital (roaming on US Cellular, in Maine I'd guess), but I know some say even with the maps, in rural areas one still needs analog. Everytime I think I'm getting close to a decision, or narrow down phone choices that meet trimode and other requirements, someone will say, why trimode? So please, everyone with some knowlege on this subject, please, please help! Thanks |

My phone, Nokia 3589, is tri-mode, but I selected it because of reception. I feel that in the area that you describe, analog is not necessary. Many, many people have commented that when the phone goes to analog, they still cannot make a call. In addition, NJ, CT and NYC are well covered by Verizon. At least in CT, my hometown, the back country has no coverage Analog or Digital. I am talking in the back country, far north of the Merritt Parkway. Many have commented that phones that are not tri-mode work better, because they do not need components that use analog and the mfg can concentrate and use space for Digital components. In addition, if you are not in Maine, that often and there is a landline available, you can get a discount, prepaid ATT card from Sams Club at 3.75 cents a minute. I am not saying you do not have digital coverage in Maine, I am saying that if you do not and you are not their that often, you can use a land line. Bottom line, choose the phone best for you without concern for number of modes and go that way. You will be happy in NJ CT NYC and hopefully Maine.

As to your trips to Maine, US Cellular has virtually all of the state covered with CDMA digital. Verizon customers roam on the US Cellular network. I doubt you will need analog, unless you are planning to go to the northwestern part of Maine, where you are more likely to run into "no service" than into Analog only. The areas where there are more people than bears are well covered with digital. -way |
