Default Roaming in Canada

Have been following these forums for about a month, an I must say they are immensely useful to anybody looking at selecting a phone or service. Appreciate everyones contribution. Been a week since I switched over to Verizon, and got two vx4400 units. Love them!!! However, Verizon does not seem to be as strong around where I live in Northwestern PA. I am trying to decide whether the service is good enough to be usable, or whether I should cancel within my 15 days (that would really hurt ). A buddy of mine (has been with Verizon for a long time) said that he gets "no signal" as soon as he crosses over into Canada at Niagara Falls. My question is, can I roam with Verizon North of the border into Toronto?

Yes you should be able to roam with Verizon north of the border (at a cost of course).

In the greater Toronto area, I believe the roaming partner is Bell Mobility and for most of Canada you'd be roaming on Telus Mobility. Coverage was very good for me all over in BC/Alberta/Manitoba/Saskatchewan and Ontario. Although I haven't tried it near Niagra Falls.

Thanks for the response. Will give it a shot this weekend. May still take one of my Cellular Ones phones with me too to compare coverage.

How "not as strong" are we talking about here? When i talk to my girlfriend from Midtown all the way to Jamaica bay area in brooklyn I typically don't notice any change in call quality despite the variations in the signal bars on my phone. My recomendation is get on the hands free and start talking while driving around to see if you notice any places were coverage gets too weak to maintain the convo.

"not as strong" as in "weak". When it's just laying on my desk, it keeps constantly beeping (I have the service change indicator on) and switching between "no service", analog (4-5 bars at times) and 1x (1 bar). If I try calling it from my home phone, it goes directly to VM (as if it were switched off) but other times, it will ring (sitting in the same spot). I am going to start a new thread on this issue because the local Verizon store manager told me that they were converting their local towers from analog to digital and my reception should improve by the end of April.

IF I were you I would take the phones back and cancel service during the fifteen day trial period if you are having that much trouble. I understand that the guy told you that it would be converted by the end of April but I would not trust this. When this has been completed I would then go back to verizon.

How is your cellular one coverage?

Jack
