My current coverage with a Nokia 8265 on the AT&T TDMA network stinks. My home and career place me in Setauket, Stony Brook, Coram, Medford and Commack (Suffolk County Long Island). My contract expired so I am living on per minute charges, so time is of the essence. Which network and carrier has the best coverage? I use approximately 300 mins. but was considering going into a plan with my fiance. He works all over the Island and uses many mins. Maybe upwards of 30 mins. daily. Any suggestions for plans, carriers and/or phones? I am overwhelmed by all the choices out there and hate making decisions!!! |

Welcome to WA good_vibes. To answer your question, I would suggest asking friends and family which carrier they use in the area(s) you want covered and then choose the one that covers your area the best and then choose a phone and plan and use the tryout period of your selected carrier. Also if you call back and forth to each other frequently, then I would suggest you get either a family plan or a plan that offers unlimited calling between phones while on your carriers network. IMO, your best bets would probably be Sprint PCS, Verizon, or Cingular, but I may be wrong. Hopefully someone that either lives or been to those areas can tell you how good their carrier is.

You may want to consider AT&T GSM. They probably have GSM coverage where there is no TDMA and besides they roam on Cingular where their signal fades.

I live not too far away from your town (Smithtown) and I have AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile Pre-pay. And AT&T works much better on the Island. A lot less dead spots all around and AT&T uses 850Mhz channels vs 1900 that T-Mobile uses so you get much better building penetration. If you ever drove down Jericho/Rt. 25 by the new Stop and Shop they built next to the bull I get full strength. But once I go over by Chase Bank I have almost no signal. I never have such problems with AT&T (GSM and TDMA). I had Sprint before and it was awful. But that was over two and a half years ago. Verizon also has good coverage all over Long Island from what I hear. |
