SIM free would be unlocked and you can use that unlock phone on any carrier, depending what type of carrier that is. For instance, you couldn't use a Nokia 3360 phone with Sprint because Sprint is CDMA. So in other words, if you can find an unlocked phone that would be much cheaper to pay for then buying the same locked phone from your cellphone service, go for it! Or...if you find a compatible unlocked phone your cellphone service does not provide, then go for it! |

SIM-free usually means the phone has never been locked. An unlocked phone is one that went through all the standard carrier locks but was then unlocked by entering a code. An unlocked phone may allow you to use any SIM card you want, but it MAY still have locked data accounts or wap browsers. Not all carriers lock the config, and some will lock the defaults but allow you to add other configs. My T68i has locked data account configs that I can't edit, but I can add new accounts freely. SIM-free will not have those problems. (But you'll have to configure everything yourself.) I have a Nokia 3650 and 7210 that are both SIM-free and were never locked by any carrier. |

Be careful, though, in purchasing a mobile on EBay or elsewhere which is called "SIM-free". I see this problem mostly on EBay-UK, but some sellers think that Sim-free just means that a SIM is not included with the phone. If you see this, it's a good idea to send an email to the seller confirming that the phone is in fact "Unlocked" !
