Hey all, My folks are headed to India for a months vacation and I'm giving them my 8890 to take there. They plan on getting a pre-paid SIM while over there to put into the phone. The phone has never been unlocked. Doesn't the phone need to be Unlocked before it can use one of the prepaid SIM chips over there? Or does unlocking the phone for international use only apply if they were to go there with their US TMobile SIM chip in the phone and roam on their US phone number? I bought the phone almost 2 years ago from Powertel, the company that VoiceStream bought, so I'm not sure who to call for unlock codes if needed, so I thought I'd try this forum first. Thanks in advance. |

I doubt if your phone has the gsm bandwidths that are used in India. American gsm is 1900 and the rest of the world is on 800 and 1800 gsm bandwidths.

Have you tried contacting T-Mobile. I think they give you the code if you've had the service for more than 30 days. It seems that if VoiceStream bought PowerTel and T-Mobile is the "new" VoiceStream" they should be able to provide you with the code, based on the IMEI number of your phone (which they should have on there records).
