Well I did not get the response I was hoping for. I guess that I'll stick to looking at Sprint only.

I don't know how Nextel is where you are but in lots of areas Sprint beats it in coverage. And it isless obnoxious than with that Nextel Alert beep and speaker phone intruding on everyone else. Although if you want a work walki talki and coverage is ok where you are, Nextel may be good for that. IDen is not exactly an up and coming technology.

If you really want the WalkieTalkie thing I'd go with the hybrid Deluxe™ ic902 - it's not a Nextel phone, but a Sprint phone with DirectConnect. Unless you're in a business that uses iDen for all its phones the pure Nextel phones (like the Motorola i880) are pretty much of a dead end. - sheureka

The only down fall to the hybrid phones is that they cant roam on 850 if you get into some of those roaming areas.

Thats not good that you can not roam on the 850 MHz band

Whatever you decide to do, get a new line of service with a new number from whatever carrier you chose to try, DO NOT port your ALLTEL number over right away. Try out the new carrier for their trial period- if their coverage, customer service, features, etc. is not what you were looking for, simply cancel, otherwise simply port your ALLTEL number over later.

I have chosen to abolish the nextel idea after a little more research in favor of Sprint.

Yes, Southern LINC uses the same SMR (Specialized Mobile Radiotelephone) band as Nextel, and the same Motorola iDEN handsets (sole source) as Nextel.

SoLinc does roam on Nextel in selected areas outside of its native coverage on a per minute basis , IIRC...

I never had them, they have service available in my area but they dont advertise in these parts and the closest shop is 40 miles from me acress the state line

if you are a big texter than i do not reccomend nextel. the text messaging on nextels network is horrible. takes a very long time to send or get texts. never mind pic messages. and from the responses so far with these new hyrbid phones sprint/ nextel has come out with, doesnt sound very good. its all which you prefer.
