Default New to Nextel

I am new to Nextel service. My work purchased me a phone through Nextel. Originally I was issued a Hybrid phone but, since I am not in a hybrid supported area, the phone did not function properly. As such, we were issued new Nextel i560 phones. They seem to work fine, but their reception is CONSIDERABLY worse than the previously issued hybrids. I have Verizon service for my personal phone and I know that I can update the software to search for newly constructed towers by dialing *228. I was curious if there was a similar function with Nextel that I could ensure my phone is searching for the closest available tower. It just seemed odd that I went from full signal to literally intermittent signal of 1 or no bars. Any help? Thanks in advance

When you say you're not in a "hybrid supported area", do you mean you are with one of Sprint's affiliates? You say you went from full service with the hybrid phone to barely any with the i560, then that sounds to me that you are in a Sprint service area.

All the hybrid phones are are Sprint for calls, Nextel for walkie-talkie. Whereas your i560 uses ONLY Nextel for all calls and walkie-talkie.

There is no *228 setup for Nextel, besides all *228 does for Verizon is update your roaming capabilities (provided there is an updated Preferred Roaming List) and program your phone. It has NO effect on improving signal quality.

We might need a little more clarification to fully diagnose what may be going on for you, specifically where you live.
