Posting your IMEI on the web is not a good idea. This makes it possible for someone to clone your SIM.

Try asking in the Motorola Forum over at Howard's Forums:

http://motorola.howardforums.com

Look at the V5xx/V551 stickies posted over there as well, your topic may have been covered before.

Thanks for the pointer. Now you can see what a newbie I am. People are posting their eimi's all over another website, so I thought it was helpful info.

I thought it was like a batch number- didn't realize it was individualized!

No problem , the IMEI is the unique number sent to your provider. This is how they are able to recognize you as an authentic user.

Did you find any answers over at Howard's Forums?

The IMEI is not needed to enable Field Test. All you need is software like VictorGSM and a data cable.

I went through all the stickies from Howard's Forums, but no answers....the code (menu073887) only works on older phones. Cingular has taken that option off newer phones it seems. But someone responded to me on Howard's and is giving helpful guidance, like bobolito here.

I appreciate all the help, and once I've figured out how to download the right software and get field test mode enabled, I'll be happy to pass on the info to other newbies like me.

Their site, http://www.victorgsm.com/ and http://www.victorgsm.net/ seem to be down or have been closed. As far as I know, they also had the software.

Thanks, I found some "custom flex" software for motorola v551 at motomodders.com

I downloaded the zip file. And I bought the usb cable.

Is there someone out there who could walk me through it?
I'd pay $$ for the help.

I'm just trying to import the "field test mode" setting. Nothing fancy.

thanks

how is posting your phone's IMEI a bad idea???

cloners cannot clone your GSM phone, only your SIM!! and by the way, the SIM's serial number is not printed anywhere on it, so the only way i can think of a cloner copying your SIM is if they steal your SIM
