Finally, the future is here. The video phones we were promised as kids are coming into reality. Check out the OJO from Motorola. Now if I could just get a flying car...

Super expensive with a monthly charge just for the phone! I've used it. Not worth it. Plus if your other rich friends don't also have one for you to talk with, it is then a poorly designed regular phone.

There's a monthly charge to use it? That's kind of stupid... don't you already have to pay for broadband access to use the thing? Wow, and it's $799.99 to boot... and of course you need at least two to use the service. I guess my futuristic dream of video phones and wise- robotic maids is dashed... for now.

Just like all new electronic gadgets, maybe 10 years from now it will be more affordable, so there' s hope Rancid, remember when the VCR was first released?

No, I'm not that old... but I do remember how much DVD players and CD players were when they were first released and I know how much they are now so I'm sure we'll be able to buy an affordable video phone within the next few years.

Woah, over $1000? That's crazy. I wouldn't pay that much for anything (except a computer, car or house... maybe stereo if I was buying B&O.) Well, I may have been a kid when the VCR first came out. I remember people still had Betamax when I was little but I can't remember if the VCR came out before I was born or after... I was born in February of 1979.

I still watch laserdiscs!! I had over 100 of them when they became obsolete. When I moved, about 6 months ago, I got rid of about 35 of them. I kept mostly those I haven't already bought the DVD for. I've been watching them recently. Not anywhere as good as DVDs but fun nonetheless.

A few years ago my original Sony LD player bit the dust, I semi-panicked because I didn't know if they even made LD players anymore. I checked around and found an Internet electronics place, out of NYC, that had a Pioneer LD/DVD combo player. This player normally sold for $1200.00, but they had it for $700.00!! I bought it in an instant and use it today. I enjoy watching laserdiscs again. They were awesome before DVDs came out. They sure as heck beat VHS!!

Those really big disc would get warped some time, my Dad used to have this system of heating them up just enough to flatten them back out.

I still remeber the night he forgot about one and overcooked it....man was he mad....

I've done a similar procedure with vinyl records.

I still have a turntable (well, four, actually) and I buy most of my new albums on vinyl as opposed to CD, if it's available. If I could find an old LD player that still worked at a pawn shop or something I might consider buying it if I could find LDs for sale but I've never seen used LDs for sale around here. They'd probably be cheaper than VHS or DVD... although, maybe not. Still, it's worth looking into.

What kind of turntables are you using Rancid?

I remember the first VCR my parents bought in the mid 80's. VHS 4 head Stereo HI-FI dolby cost like $800 or $900 (and I think they had a coupon too). Now you can get a TV with a VCR & a DVD player in it for less than half that. Consumer electronics definately get cheaper. Why doesn't this apply to other areas of the market though? My Dad bought a new Pontiac Bonneville absolutely loaded up w/ options for $10,000 in 1980. Now a Bonneville is less than half the size and costs twice as much!

I've got a Crosley turntable/CD player/cassette deck that looks like an old radio from the 1930s, I've got an Optimus direct drive, linear tracking turntable, my parent's old B&O that I'm trying to get fixed and some sort of portable turntable that looks like it used to belong to a school. Can't remember where I got it and it needs a new needle but the turntable itself is attached to the bottom part of a suitcase-looking case and the top part of the case is the speaker. It's actually kind of cool... if it worked.
