Default v3m through the washer, almost completely works...

My v3m went through 45 minutes of being agitated in soapy water, and at least 10 minutes in the dryer before my wife fished it out. I let it dry overnight before trying it, and was shocked when the thing powered right up with both displays the first time I tried. There was still some moisture inside the displays, so I left it on top of a CRT monitor with the battery removed all day to help speed the drying a bit before trying to make a call. When I did, everything worked except the other end of the call couldn't hear me.

I took the thing apart as much as I could with a T5 driver (ie: anything held down with screws smaller than that I didn't get into), and sprayed it all out with electronics cleaner and let it dry thoroughly. That didn't do any good.

The odd thing is, the mic seems to be fine, as I can hear sidetone in the earpiece (I can hear what I'm saying), but the mic audio doesn't get sent out. I tried the speakerphone, didn't make any difference. It's frustrating that it's like 99% working, but the 1% not working is kind of important...

Any ideas what to try next? Should I get smaller torx drivers and open it up the rest of the way and clean it out?

Thanks,
Greg

If the phone was washed there probably is no hope for it, but it does not hurt to try. Take the battery and SIM card (if equipped) out. Leave the back off the phone and let it air out for several days in a slightly warm, dry place. Reassemble the phone and try it out, but as a precaution backup your contacts list so if the phone dies you still have that info.

As a general rule the washing machine is the kiss of death for modern phones as their circuit boards are so small and densely packed that mineral deposits left behind after water evaporates are usually enough to render the phone inoperable.

I wasn't able to get the phone to work again. I was wrong in my original post, the mic did not work at all, but the frustrating thing is that was the only thing that didn't work. I ended up buying a motorola w385 on ebay for about $100, which I actually like better...

Good luck with yours...

If you washed it last night and you've already tried to turn it on then it is toast. You should not attempt to turn it on until it is completely dried out.
