Post October updates

V26x is in the final week of planned testing.

Verizon V710 update was pushed back a week by Verizon, this update isn't a priority for them.

A840 could be approved by end of the month.

V710 for other providers is wrapping up testing. Just waiting on 90 day Verizon exclusive period to end later this month.

Is it true that the V710 update will disable features, such as move and copy to push our dependency on GIN? This is what someone wrote on phonescoop.

I hope not, at least for the CellularONE version.

Hmm... where there is a will....

My question is: if another carrier, say "Alltel," were to suddenly carry the V710, and say, me, were to have already signed a 2 year life sentence with VZW: would we be able to flash the Alltel version of the firmware and activate the phone ourselves on the VZW network? This seems plausible to me.

The benefits are: If Alltel decides OBEX is not a problem (or anything else we want) we should be able to get that functionality and run it on the VZW network.

What do y'all think?

No, if you flash the phone with Alltel's firmware the phone is going to try and use Alltel's system all the time, even if a Verizon signal is available and even if the phone has a Verizon PRL. It would end up being much more trouble than it's worth... just get the handset unlocked.

When I had ALLTEL, I asked if I could activate a Sprint phone with them and they said no, they said that the only other provider's phone that I could activate with them would be if it was a Verizon phone.

First of all, thanks Bono for the updates...

and second, sorry to change the subject on your thread...

Of course they'll say no, you would have to hack the phone like some did with the Virgin Mobile Slider to be used on Verizon's network, this of course was before Verizon got the Slider and of course some features didn't work like GIN and messasing, so like Rancid said, it wouldn't be worth the trouble...

Btw, why the different model numbers? some have posted v260, v262, v26x...

are these different phones, or are we referring to a series?

No, no, no.

You can use an Altel phone on VZW network without hacking the phone.

You can if you have it flashed with the Verizon firmware which is easy but it doesn't solve the problems of the locked features, like OBEX as Cetrian mentioned. The problem is people want to run the Alltel firmware on the Verizon network which won't work unless the phone is hacked and that's just too much damn trouble... getting it unlocked is just easier.

True, also alot of the Virgin Mobile Slider users for example didn't have any luck flashing the software into their phones, Verizon wouldn't do it since it wasn't a Verizon phone...
