Hi. I've been visiting this forum for a while now, and everyone seems pretty knowledgable. I just have a quick question. My service provider is Cingular, which apparently uses TDMA. I want to buy an i95cl, which uses IDEN/TDMA (I think...is IDEN for the direct connect?) Anyways, I was just wondering if I could buy the phone, unlock it, and insert a Cingular SIM card. I don't how to go about doing so or even if it is possible. If anyone knows the answer, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks auxmaster7 PS. If it can be done, where can I get the phone unlocked? |

if I am understanding right, TDMA phones (such as the phones for Cingular and TDMA) do not use sim cards. Only GSM phones use sim cards, that you replace. So no I dont think you can unlock the phone and simply pop in a sim card, cause there is no place to put a sim card in that phone. I think that is a phone that Motorola only made for Nextel. Anyone else want to add? hope that helps |

I forgot to add that Cingular also has a GSM network. Whether that's only in some parts of the country or not, I'm not sure. So...is it possible then?

auxmaster7... i agree with Z28black98. i don't believe you can just use your sim card into a i95cl phone if it uses TDMA because TDMA does not use sim cards. i think you might have either CDMA or GSM not TDMA. i had pac bell (cingular) back in the day and i believe just like most companies if you were to switch phones it would have to be specifically meant for cingular only. or at least phones that use sim cards. i'm not sure though. |

auxmaster7...i forgot to read your last post. is your phone gsm? then i'm pretty sure like i said in my last post that you won't be able to use your sim card with an i95cl phone unless there is one available specifically for cingular or something. basically what i said in my previous post

The phone still probably wont work, because the phone you are talking about is for inet/TDMA, therefore would not work on the Cingular GSM network. Also, it wont have a SIM Card, because its TDMA, and they dont have Sim Cards, so the phone and the system are incompatible whichever way you look at it. Hope that helps |

The brief answer is that you can only use it on Nextel. Here is the scoop. The i95cl is a Nextel-branded iDEN/TDMA phone. iDEN is a kind of TDMA. The phone can only be used with Nextel, and (with some luck) on Telus Mike in Canada. I don't know for certain that there are other iDEN providers in the world. Now, here is the rundown: AT&T run both a TDMA network and a GSM network nationwide. Cingular run GSM networks in CA, NV, WA, ID, NYC, NC, SC, and eastern TN. They run TDMA elsewhere and are in the process of converting to GSM. T-Mobile run a GSM network nationwide. GSM phones take SIM cards. No other phone - TDMA, CDMA, analog - takes a SIM card. You won't be able to use a GSM SIM in that phone anyway, because almost all the GSM in this country is in the 1900MHz (PCS) band and the i95cl operates in the 800MHz (cellular) band. Sorry.

Actually most of the new Nextels do use sim cards, not sure about the i95 though.

It does depend on the area. Just like Verizon is CDMA in some parts and PCS in some areas also. This is due to all the consolidation of providers. | |
