Have decided to go cell but the only thing holding me back is the need to hook a modem up to my pc a couple of times a week to dial in to the job's network and "check on things". We're not running VPN and don't really need to for any other purpose so I'm looking for a phone (preferably Motorola) that I can connect to the pc, dial into a modem at work, run some telnet, then hangup..... Anyone else doing this? What do I need to know and what advice can you offier? Can I do it with a V60, V66 P280 etc? Don't some have built in modems? Only need 9600 so speed should not be an issue. Not really interested in accessing the internet with the phone, would prefer to just use it as primary phone and to dial into the private network at the job. Thanks again, Bob

Thanks Scott, had seen that on the Motorol site. I called Motorola Tech Support this morning and asked a lot of questions. Was told that yes the V60 and 280 both had 14.4 modems in them and that I shouldn't have any problems using the Voicestream (T-Mobile) network for what I want. We'll see. A little nervous about it because I really do want Bellsouth out of the house as soon as possible. I'll be using a proprietary telnet program program to dial in to the job and I just have a sinking feeling about this ut we'll see. Maybe XP will recognize the phone as a modem like the docs say and there will be no problems... LOL! Thanks again |

Hey Bob, I think I am in a similar situation. I recently purchased a Motorola phone with the built in modem also (the 120t). I do not want to connect to the internet with my phone. I want to use it as a data modem to connect to our private network also. I use a proprietary software that I can dial in from my laptop into a standard office modem that is connected to some of our proprietary equipment that is in a remote location. This way I can then control this equipment from my office. My goal was to be able to do the same thing except without having to always hunt down a land line to plug my laptop's modem into. I received the data kit but I am still struggling. Our software requires that I type in the AT Dial String to operate the modem. Our software does not utilize the software that was included in the data kit. I have gone round and round with Motorola and Cingular on this subject, but they keep refering me back to installing the software that came with the phone. All I need is the simple AT Dial String. I have a simple AT Dial String that I have used with a couple of various land line modems, but this same string won't quite work right with this cellular phone. It acts like it is going to dial out, and it even flashing across the phone screen that is it dialing, but it never actually does. |

The V60 did the job! I had to install the drivers from the Motorola CD for a serial connection but that was about it. Our software (Meditech Workstation) only recognizes Com Ports 1 thru 8 so I had to opt for the serial cable instead of the USB. You'll have to install the Motorola USB drivers too if you go that route...... After you get the drivers loaded and see the phone/modem in the device drivers I would think you would be able to use Hyperterminal to throw AT command at the phone and make sure everything is setup correctly. Or go to Control Panel and run the modem diagnostic. This Meditech Workstation software we use is a combination dialer and proprietary telnet program. We can issue pre-dial strings to it but I have never had to, It has always used what windows sends to it. Know I haven't been much help here but keep plugging away. Bob |

Bob, did you have to subscribe to a Wireless Inetnet or Wireless Internet Express service before your cell phone modem started working? I was told by one of the Cingular tech support people that I had to subscribe to this service before I could use my phone for a modem, even if I was trying to connect to my own private network and not the internet. This just doesn't make any sense to me. But on the other hand, I have not been able to use my phone as a modem at all. I didn't get any Motorola drivers with my Data Kit, but Motorola claims that Cingular purchased their drivers from them and it is part of their software installation package. I have installed this software on quite a few different computers with different operating systems and the software is never able to find my phone. I am pretty sure that my cable is correct because I can send AT commands to my phone via Hyperterminal, but I cannot make it dial. I would think that even without this monthly fee "service", that my computer would find the cellular modem. Just wondering if you have the same problem. |

No you do not have to subscribe, but the Motorola tech I talked to before I bought the phone said that some providers may not allow data but since I was GSM I wouldn't have a problem. You won't be using their internet service, you'd just be making "call" to a modem instead of a phone. Are you using USB or serial? And have you asked Motorola if they would provide you with the link for downloading the drivers? The USB Data Kit #98326 and the Multi-Connect Serial Data Kit #98320 both come with a CD that contain all the drivers and TrueSync software to manage calendar, phone book, etc. I do notice that Motorola's Webpage mentions the 120c but not the "t".......... |

Thanks alot for the info Bob. I am using Serial since I am working on an NT 4.0 system. I am sorry that it took me so long to post again. I was out of town for a week. Just before I left last week I ordered the exact items that you recommended. I have been trying them for most of the day but I am still having the same problem. The phone attempts to make a call (at least I think it does) because it quickly displays that it is dialing, but that screen disappears very quickly. I am begging to think I am having a problem because I am using CDMA. I noticed that you said that you are not having any problems but you are on a GSM system. My provider claims that they allow the phones to be used as data modems, but they have only experience with using their "Cingular Wireless" service that is a subscription and it used to connect to their internet. I am begging to think that since I am in a Cingular area and this is a CDMA system that my phone can be used as a "Data Modem" as long as I am using their internet service. That won't work for me. Once again, thank you so much for your help. You have given me a lot of ideas and nudges in the right direction. I appreciate it. I will let you know if I ever make a break-through. Mitch |

I bet it is the network. You might try calling Motorola Tech Support and asking them, the kids in the local stores and kiosks knew nothing about it. I don't think they get trained very well. I did make a call to T-mobile Tech Supoort and got some help from them as well. Good Luck... PS. Sorry I took so long to reply too . Bob |
