Default Send ringtones to Motoroal C331t?

Hey all,

Is it possible to send ringtones to these phones instead of entering in the numbers manually? For instance, I received some ringtones from a commercial site and they were formatted something like this:

()1/2:BEGIN:IMELODYVERSION:1.0FORMAT:CLASS1.0BEAT:255M ELODY:[notes].
()2/2:[notes]END:IMELODY

I tried to send myself an SMS message with the same format, and although when I received it, I could 'Store Tone' it doesn't play. Anybody gotten something like this to work successfully?

Also, the 'notes' in these messages don't seem the same as what people are showing for notes in other threads here for Motorola phones. Here's an example:
*5c3r2e2g2r3g0.r3e1r1r1r2g0.r3e1r3c3r2e2g2r3g0.r3e 1r0r2g

Anybody have any info on this?

The problem is, you are using keypress format, but the tones are sent via SMS in the iMelody format. If you have Coding Workshop Ringtone Converter, look for the iMelody conversion, under "other phones" Here, try using this example of the tetris theme as your notes

*4#f2*4#c3*4d3*4e3*4#f4*4e4*4d3*4#c3*3b2*3b3*4d3*4 #f2*4e3*4d3*4#c2*4#c3*4d3*4e2*4#f2*4d2*3b2*3b1r3*4 e2*4g3*4b2*4a3*4g3*4#f2*4#f3*4d3*4#f2*4e3*4d3*4#c2 *4#c3*4d3*4e2*4#f2*4d2*3b2*3b2

Tell me if it works

Default Send ringtones to Motorola C331t?

Cool, thanks...

I was able to send PART of the melody to my phone, but I ran out of space and couldn't fit the whole thing. I can't seem to figure out how to send two separate parts, even though I entered the example in my original message. It doesn't work when I try it.

What's "Coding Workshop Ringtone Converter"?

Thanks again...

Default Send ringtones to Motorola C331t?

OK. I have become a bit of a reluctant authority on the Moto C331T regarding ringtones. (Owing to Cingular's inability to deliver midi ringtones as advertised, but that's a topic for another post. For info on the unholy union between Motorola's C331T and Cingular's TDMA network, search for those terms. I'll be posting another message on "C331T, midi, polyphonic, ringtones, Cingular". Here's a teaser: Despite Moto's advertising the C331T as being capable of polyphonic "midi" ringtones, Cingular's TDMA network can't deliver them, so Motorola apparently changed the firmware in the microbrowser to disallow the midi document type.)

The remainder of this post applies to getting monophonic "iMelody" ringtones into your C331T, as that is all we poor suckers will ever get.

Truths:

1. You can key in ringtones using the 331's ringtone composer. If you choose to key them in, you must use keypresses designed for the 331 or the T720. The V60, V66, etc. will not work. Apparently the ringtone engine in those phones is different, while the ringtone engine in the 331 and 720 are the same. If the keypresses are designed for any phone but the 720 or 331, they will not sound right.

2. The 331 ringtone composer has a keypress limit, meaning that you'll never be able to key in a ringtone of any decent length. (You might get a dozen notes, if you're lucky. Yes, there are ways of reducing the number of keypresses, such as eliminating superfluous non-changing octave specifiers, etc., but this is supposed to be fun, not work.)

Conclusions:

1. Forget keying in ringtones on the C331T. It's a waste of time, and the resulting ringtones will be an embarassment to you and those around you.

2. The best way to get a ringtone into your phone --again a monophonic, "iMelody" ringtone, since the C331T can't do a poly ringtone-- is to use SMS to send it to your phone. You can purchase ringtones through Moto or Cingular, who will SMS the purchase to you, or you can send your phone an SMS by yourself. Here's How:

If You Already Have iMelody ringtones, and you wish just to send them, proceed to step 2 below. If you do not, or you want to follow from start to finish, proceed with step 1.

------------------Step 1: Get an iMelody ringtone.

Go here and buy Coding Workshop's Ringtone Converter: http://www.ringtonesoftware.com/ It's 12 or 13 dollars. (And no, don't ask me for my registration information. ) Install Ringtone Converter. Input your registration code. (The demo only allows you to manipulate the "Dallas" ringtone, the theme from Dallas. And who wants that?) No, I don't work for them.

Go get yourself an RTTL ringtone. RTTL apparently is the Nokia standard for ringtones. There are a million free RTTL ringtones available. Here are a couple places: http://www.free-ringtones.tv and http://www.free-ringtones.uk.com . You will want to copy the RTTL ringtone (not the keypresses!). A proper RTTL/Nokring ringtone will look like this:

Aha - Take On Me=4,o=4,b=160:8f#5, 8f#5, 8f#5, 8d5, 8p, 8b, 8p, 8e5, 8p, 8e5, 8p, 8e5, 8g#5, 8g#5, 8a5, 8b5, 8a5, 8a5, 8a5, 8e5, 8p, 8d5, 8p, 8f#5, 8p, 8f#5, 8p, 8f#5, 8e5, 8e5, 8f#5, 8e5, 8f#5, 8f#5, 8f#5, 8d5, 8p, 8b, 8p, 8e5, 8p, 8e5, 8p, 8e5, 8g#5, 8g#5, 8a5, 8b5, 8a5, 8a5, 8a5, 8e5, 8p, 8d5, 8p, 8f#5, 8p, 8f#5, 8p, 8f#5, 8e5, 8e5

You may, if you like, copy this ringtone for use with Ringtone Converter. Paste this ringtone into the main textbox of Ringtone Converter.

The "Select a Phone" dropdown listbox should read "Other." The "Select a Handset" dropdown listbox should read "iMelody Ringtone Format."

Click the button to convert the RTTL ringtone which you have pasted into the textbox. Ringtone Converter will generate an iMelody ringtone. But you're not done.

Save the iMelody ringtone by clicking the "File" menu item and then "Save current ringtone to file..." Locate a convenient directory, name the file, and save the file as type "iMelody Ringtone File (.imy)".

Go to that file and open it using Notepad or other text editor. You will see that your saved iMelody ringtone file contains something like this:

BEGIN:IMELODY
VERSION:1.2
FORMAT:CLASS1.0
NAME:Select_a_ringtone...
BEAT:160
MELODY:*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3*4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3 *5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3* 5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3*5#f3*5e3*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3* 4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3*5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a 3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3
END:IMELODY

Do yourself a favor and change the NAME field to something useful, otherwise you will have to name the ringtone when you receive it on your phone. Your changed text should read like this:

BEGIN:IMELODY
VERSION:1.2
FORMAT:CLASS1.0
NAME:Take on Me
BEAT:160
MELODY:*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3*4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3 *5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3* 5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3*5#f3*5e3*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3* 4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3*5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a 3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3
END:IMELODY

Now, the only fields, for a 331, that are strictly necessary are the BEGIN:IMELODY, the MELODY, and the END:MELODY fields. VERSION and FORMAT are not necessary, the NAME is useful, and the BEAT is useful. This is important information to know, as an individual SMS message can only be something like 160 characters long. So you may have to do some judicious paring of your message. You could pare it down like this:

BEGIN:IMELODY
BEAT:160
MELODY:*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3*4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3 *5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3* 5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3*5#f3*5e3*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3* 4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3*5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a 3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3
END:IMELODY

You have successfully generated an iMelody ringtone! You're almost there. Copy the above text and get ready to paste it into an email. Proceed to Step 2.

-----------------------Step 2:

Place your iMelody ringtone into the body of an email message. The body of your message should look something like this:

BEGIN:IMELODY
BEAT:160
MELODY:*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3*4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3 *5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3* 5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3*5#f3*5e3*5#f3*5#f3*5#f3*5d3r3* 4b3r3*5e3r3*5e3r3*5e3*5#g3*5#g3*5a3*5b3*5a3*5a3*5a 3*5e3r3*5d3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3r3*5#f3*5e3*5e3
END:IMELODY

Address the email message to YourTenDigitPhoneNumber@mobile.mycingular.com. 1234567890@mycingular.com, for example.

Did you send the message? If you did and you could not play the ringtone by opening the message (which I'm betting you couldn't) it's because the message exceeded the 160 character limit. You got two messages, neither of which would play a ringtone.

Try sending this one to yourself:

BEGIN:IMELODY
NAME:Funky Town
BEAT:125
MELODY:*5#f3*5#f3*5e3*5#f3r3*5#c3r3*5#c3*5#f3*5b3* 5#a3*5#f3r1
END:IMELODY

When you receive the message and open it, the ringtone should play automatically. This message doesn't exceed the SMS limitation of 160 characters. You will then be able to "Store Tone".

You're Done! (Except for being able to send yourself a decent-sized ringtone that exceeds 160 characters.) On that topic, read on.

---------Concatenated SMS Messages

The reason why commercially available ringtones, through Moto and Cingular, for example, are longer is because their method of sending an SMS message (actually it's EMS, I believe, Enhanced Messaging Service, presumably) is able to include in the message special identifiers that tell the phone that the entire message will be received in multiple, smaller messages. Your phone receives the messages, waits for all expected messages to arrive, assembles the messages in the proper order, then beeps to alert you to the presence of a new message. this one new message has stitched together, or "concatenated" all the smaller messages.

How do we do this? That I do not know. There are desktop SMS applications available, none of which I got to work properly. So I couldn't tell which, if any, would do multipart, or concatenated, SMS.

It does not appear possible to insert these multipart identifiers into the email itself, as they are 7-bit, rather than 8-bit, as text is.

If anyone knows how to send multipart SMS, please let us know! And is there a way to do it cheaply? I want to get the whole Dig Dug or Wallace & Gromit theme on my phone, and I don't want to spend a lot of money doing it.

Anyone, anyone?
